so I have a project I've been working on a little bit at a time, to build some software for a car-based computer. I wanted to see if any of you guys might have ideas for features that might be helpful to you from a car based pc. here's the list I've come up with so far. you can assume that said software would have full access to the vehicle's built in computer, and the status of just about any switch in the vehicle (windows/door locks/anything).
I. Possible features to develop: a. OBDII/CAN vehicle data real-time b. HD/AM/FM Radio c. DVD player d. MP3 database/player e. GPS navigation/data f. Phone connection to display call data / txt messages g. Full internet access (cell wifi or houston wifi if it ever happens) h. Voice recognition i. Keyfob style security? j. Automatic download/update of data/logs to house comp from driveway (through house wifi) k. Convienent couple of USB ports for connecting external devices l. Rear view/other camera m. Email? n. TV (via orb maybe?) (or OTA?) o. Calculator p. Gas mileage gauge / oil change / inspection sticker reminder? q. Work with outlook calendar I've already done a good deal of background work for A, E, F, I and P. this would most likely be used in combo with a touch screen setup to either replace or supplement the existing head unit. http://www.mp3car.com has some pretty cool ideas/examples as well. |

does this actually serve a purpose or just a project for the hell of it?
i mean how much time do you actually spend in your car? install voice recognition in your house. now that would be awesome. -------------------- Don't sweat the petty, pet the sweaty.

Since you're in Houston why not scrape the Transtar site and analyze the traffic data and propose the fastest route to a particular destination utilizing the GPS?
Or, have the GPS data recorded along with time and mpg and gather meaningful data for roads around town. Build something that is easily ported to other vehicles and you could gather tons of traffic data with just a few cars. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |
