well thats where i still havent seen much data yet which is weird. i see some places saying that E85 can be as high as 105 octane, then some others saying it barely gets to 87, and some on both sides saying it has great/poor performance. just not much good info yet it seems.

Performance is suppose to increase with E85. Ethanol has higher evaporative cooling power than gasoline so the intake air charge in the cylinder is significantly cooler than when running on gasoline or E10.

At proper mixture you actually are releasing more energy in the cylinder due to the higher quantity of fuel you can burn. Ethanol can burn effeciently at much richer mixtures than gasoline can. So power is suppose to increase because you burn a lot more fuel.

QUOTE (Spectatrix @ Jun 30 2006, 05:32 PM)
The octane level doesn't affect power... just the fuel's resistance to engine knocking.

If I remember only ONE thing from thermo 1, it'll be that...

Yea, but since it burns at a faster rate it also burns less evenly and that's why you get shitty gas mileage with it. But for the most power you want to run the lowest octane you possibly can without detonation.

There are a few car enthusiats that love the stuff because it's cheap for the amount of octane they're getting. The fuel is almost knock proof. The tuners up here are getting up around 15% more torque and horsepower when protuned.

However all this high octane will do absolutely nothing for the standard line of cars(neons, malibus, corollas, etc).

Why do you think it's used in gasoline? As an octane booster. It has an ocatane rating of about 100-105. What would you use it in? You won't see any performance improvement in your Silverado.

Even if you got aftermarket engine management, you're performance would be further hindered by the stock injectors and fuel pump. They wouldn't be able to keep up with the flow, because you need a lot more E85 pumped.

Doesn't mean you'll get more power.

i'm not looking for more power. 300hp is plenty for me. i'm looking for cheaper gas that i don't lose mileage with.

You'll lose mileage with E85.

My truck can take E85, but I havent filled up with it even though I could have because you lose MPG and its not that much cheaper...in fact the few places that have it run about the same price. So you are paying more for no reason.
