Sounds like Canon is going to drop the idea.

where did you see that?

QUOTE (pysex @ Sep 12 2007, 07:34 PM) *
oh and p.s.

there's no way in hell OLED technology will allow for "cheap" hd systems

i have never seen new technology be easy on the wallet

what wonderful logic. maybe learn a little bit about it instead of making such a stupid general assumption. think about today's TVs and how complicated the screens are. now think about a diode that can be printed, as in like an inkjet printer. could you imagine for a second that something lke that would be much cheaper to manufacture than the existing types of displays?

Just a guess. They're having a lot of trouble. I think having to buy 100% of Toshibas share in the project is kind of rough.

i understand that the manufacturing costs would be cheaper, but that means nothing....absolutely nothing...with what goes on the price tag

profit doesn't imply high end user cost. it implies a good end user cost minus a small manufacturing cost. if they're squirting diodes onto a substrate with a giant printer, that's going to be way cheaper than building LCDs & plasmas.

so then what happens to the lcd's and plasmas....they aren't just going to disappear

the electronics market doesn't come out with some magical new technology and then undercut the prices of every single pre existing technology or model

i would think OLED's would take the price bracket where the high end LCD's and Plasmas are now regardless of how cheap it is to manufacture

they know there will be a high demand for this sleek new technology and they will charge you a pretty penny for it

LMAO you don't think plasmas/LCDs would disappear if a cheaper and better technology came out?

Where have you been the past couple of decades? DVDs replaced VHS, CDs replaced cassettes, cassettes replaced vinyl records etc. Do I need to go on with more examples?

OLEDs will be cheaper to produce so the price will be way lower. I'm betting that the companies that make these TVs want the price for these things to be no greater than 1000 because that means more people can afford one. Every Joe Blow off the street will have a 60 inch OLED TV in his home and black people won't have to steal them. More customers mean more revenue. Given the number of people in the world that want a 60 inch TV but can't afford one I'm willing to bet if it only cost 1000 dollars that the TV companies will make billions more than they're making now.

I just got done writing this post and I don't know how you could be so clueless about economics. It's pretty bad when Impala schools you and I agree with him!

wtf are you talking about...

No fucking company is dumb enough to release a technology and have every fucking person buy an awesomely cheap model and everyone is fucking happy at home watching Survivor HD....

If everyone has a cool new OLED then who's left to keep the manufacturers in business...

my mp3 player uses Oleds, just not the full color spectrum. Problem is the life of certain compounds, especially when you are exciting them.

You're calling Microsoft dumb? One of the most successful companies in this history of the United States? They brought the PC into every home in America (for much less than a TV) and they're one of the richest companies out there.

OLED has a shorter lifespan than plasma and LCD and OLEDs will need to be repalced every couple of years. The manufacturers will have returning customers purchasing new OLEDs when the old ones expire. It's simple to understand.

if everyone has a cool new OLED then that means they've sold 300 million sets. which is far more than is currently out there. oh and some super duper rich people actually own more than one TV *gasp* . and (this may be hard to believe I know) sometimes displays are used in places other than than TVs!

Ok so I didn't know it had a short life span

But I'd really hate to have to replace my TV every 3 years. That's not very practical at all. This is starting to sound more like a wet dream.

This thread is frustrating. I agree with you, Alex. What Impala and Lance fail to comprehend is the most basic force in economics: supply and demand. If demand is high for these things because they're the most awesome TV's ever then the prices to the consumer are going to be much higher. If I have a product that costs me $10 to make, and I can sell it for $200, why the fuck would I sell it for $100, because I fell bad for making a higher profit margin?! The only unforeseen force in this would be competition, like if a Vizio or someone starts offering it for cheap and others want to compete, but even in that scenario you have companies like Sony who set their products at higher price points as a marketing strategy. Manufacturing cost =/= retail price. Everything is relative and, while OLED's will probably be comparatively cheaper later in their life cycle, they are not going to come out at a significantly lower price point than current technology, that would just be stupid and the companies might as well shit on the hundreds of thousands of products they've already produced.

I know you guys are going to struggle with this, but if you agree to not argue about simple business strategies then I will agree to not argue with you about shit that I know nothing about.

And about CD-cassette-8 track, etc: Those are smaller media products, and when CD's first came out they were more expensive than tapes even though they cost a fraction of the price to produce. I remember back then when CD's cost $17-$20 each and you could get a tape for cheaper than that. I don't know the cost comparison of producing CD players vs cassette players, but I sure as hell know that when CD players came out at over $1000 each you didn't have to pay that much for a boom box that you could throw over your shoulder to rock your tapes.
