Our secondary looks pretty bad this year. Part of that is because Newman is out right now. Romo is incosistent, but hes getting better. We are definitely on the rise, just not close to super bowl champion caliber yet.

If only we had a secondary.

Why the giants didn't throw long every single play is beyond me.

If their signals are "that easy to steal" it would have been a guy with binoculars doing the work, not a guy videotaping them. They plant the guy there, then have him record the defensive signal caller's signals while he says the down and distance. Then they match up the packages that go in with the signals, down and distance, and what defensive scheme they ran on that play. They break it down quite a bit, it's not like it was easy for someone to steal. It's also not like they have much of a choice, the NFL owners shot down a proposal that would allow them to put equipment in a defensive player's helmet so they could call plays in like they do to the QB.

I think it is a big deal. Everybody cheats, let's not be naive, but that doesn't mean it isn't a big deal when you get busted doing it and you've got 3 super bowl rings on your fingers and allegations have been flying for years.

how would it be different with a guy writing the shit down vs a video tape? and how is it even cheating? if people want their signals to be secret then f'n make em secret. if people think others are stealing signals then change your f'n signals, hell you could even use that to your advantage and give false signals. watch a baseball game sometime. this pussy ass crybaby "omg he's cheating!" stuff is pathetic.

It's the same as a guy writing the shit down, if he could write it down really fast. In the old days they used to send 2 guys to watch an opponents' bench for the signals and one guy would take note of the signals and the other guy would see what plays or whatever are ran.

It's cheating because they violated specific rules. NFL teams are allowed to have photographers on the sidelines, but they must be identified by wearing a yellow vest, carrying credentials, and they have "blinders" around them so that they may only video tape the action on the field. This guy didn't have the vest, the blinders, and I'm not sure what credentials he was using. The tape he had showed evidence that he was specifically on the Jets' sideline to spy on them.

It's a pretty big advantage if you have a smart QB that is capable of making quick decisions coupled with your Offensive Coordinator knowing what the defense is doing. Yes, teams should take extra precautions by switching up signals, or using a decoy on the sidelines, but that seems like you might confuse your own team if you're switching a hundred hand signals a week just because the other guy is violating specific rules and cheating. Furthermore, how do you know that the Jets and other NFL teams don't have a decoy guy sending in signals. With videotape of the sidelines they could spend Monday decoding which signals are the real ones by matching up the defensive plays with the hand signals that were called in.

If you're going to cheat then you have to be ready for the consequences.

its just seems to me like this is a pretty rampant thing and the pats were just the first ones to get caught. i guess if it was against specific rules then that's fine they should be disciplined, but the underlying rule seems pretty dumb when you've got a stadium with 70,000 fans who could have cameras, HD television broadcasts, and play film for probably every play from every team easily available.

and its not any more confusing for the team to memorize that many plays, considering they already had to memorize the play itself and the verbal signals. besides, it's not the entire defense looking over to the sidelines, it's one guy, and usually a pretty smart one.

The team staffs will watch game film looking for any edge and any hints they can. I'm sure some teams probably do put people in the stands and crap like that, and the Pats have been doing this for a long time, they just finally got caught.

The suggestion that I've heard the most is giving the defensive captain and armband like QB's have with all the plays on it, then different colors next to each plays. The color they use for the plays could change at a moment's notice. For example, if the color for the first half is green then they would send in signals and it would mean a particular play under the green color, but if the color were red then the signal would correspond to a different play. I just think it's a lot of effort to do all of this instead of just severely penalizing the cheaters you catch.

yeah

that or they just need to quit living in the dark ages and allow the def capn a radio in his helmet. have the NFL turn it off during the plays or whatever if they must but i think that's the best way to go.

I was watching the NFL Network earlier and they had the head of NFL officials on there talking about it. The reason they allow it on offense is because it's easy to stick a radio in the helmet of a QB. There is only one QB on the field at a time, so they stick it in 3 helmets and only one is on the field at a time. On defense it makes it more difficult because if they put it in the MLB's helmet then they have plays where the MLB would come out for a few plays, or maybe in a 3-4 they would have 2 MLB's in and for some reason they don't want more than one radio on the field at the same time (because people like the Pats would exploit it and find a way to put radios in every helmet). It's something they're going to revisit in the offseason and I'm sure we'll see next year.
