Hay guyz, DRM is necessary for companies to protect their products from pirates.

DRM doesn't stop pirates from pirating software, all it does is piss off consumers so they TURN to piracy, those dumbass fucking sons of bitches. so if there was no copyright protection at all, you honestly believe there'd be less piracy? also kinda an update, guy here at work says he can't get the game to work, although he said his PC is admittedly barely at the minimum requirements. |

Yes, as it is right now DRM is not a deterrent AT ALL. As you can see the game was up on bittorent before it was even released in retail stores. What this means is the DRM in use right now is completely uneffective therefore if they remove the DRM you won't see any increase in piracy because we're at maximum piracy levels right now. My theory is if they removed the DRM then they would actually see a DECREASE in piracy. Let me explain, right now I'm at the stage in my life where I don't mind paying for software, games, music, etc. I have a stable job that pays a lot of money so I don't mind blowing it on entertainment. Tthe DRM in Bioshock makes the product defective, what if I want to install it on all four of my computers so I can see which one plays it best and smoothly? Oh wait... I'm limited to two versions. What if I don't want to play disc jokey and put the CD in the tray every time I play? Oh wait... I can't... I have to get a no-CD crack to do that. What I'm getting at is it's more convenient for me to get the DRM free no-cd crack pirated version off bittorrent instead of legitimately paying for their defective version. I would GLADLY drop the money on a retail version that actually worked and didn't cause a hassle for me, punish me, or automatically assume I was a criminal. Poor people are going to continue to pirate games regardless because they can't pay for them, that's why I did it in college. Now that I have a job I WANT to pay for games, but the companies are making it very hard for me, piracy is easier. |

Now that I have a job I WANT to pay for games, but the companies are making it very hard for me, piracy is easier. I know what you mean, i hate swapping CDs as much as the next guy, but you have to keep in mind that not everyone out there knows how to go out and download a CD crack or download a cracked version of some 4GB DVD-ROM game. If you had no protection at all, everybody who knows how to copy a CD would be copying the things. It does deterr those people. There are far more people out there who know how to copy a CD than people who know how to find and download cracked games. Personally I think this is why MMO games have it the best. It's essentially a never ending game, new content added all the time, and its protected without hassling the player. This bioshock game looks pretty bad ass, but eventually it will just sit on the shelf just like the rest of my non-mmo games. I'll prob get it for the 360 anyhow. |

I think you're underestimating the majority of computer users. Pretty much anyone under the age of 25 knows how to D/L pirated games and use no-CD cracks. The type of people these games are targeted at is the same exact crowd that knows everything there is to know about pirating.

The type of people these games are targeted at is the same exact crowd that knows everything there is to know about pirating. I think you're grossly overestimating the majority of computer users. Perhaps maybe the chances of a person knowing someone who could do it is much higher than it used to be, but you can't possibly believe that if you went into some college dorm right now, you could get even 10% of the people to successfully download and play a bootleg version of Bioshock, or some other relatively new game w/copy protection. But the number that could take their buddy's legit version and copy it if there were no protection would be way higher. |
