The only reason Apple's are more expensive is because of their design. That's it. The hardware has nothing to do with it.
I've bought my last Apple computer. I'm royally pissed at their marketing techniques. They release a "new" mac with really old hardware and 6 months later release an upgrade with still...really old hardware. All of their computers come with a one year warranty. You have to pay to have it upgraded to 3 years. My iMac has a 3 year warranty but the fucking thing doesn't cover the screen. That's completely separate. Their computers can't be upgraded (unless you buy a pro and the price starts at 2500). If you want to upgrade you have to do it through Applecare where it costs you 9 million dollars in parts and service. Apple has special ram for their machines. My dad bought a macbook pro through macmall and they gave him something like a free 1gb ram upgrade. Of course they put 3rd party ram in there because it's ridiculously inexpensive now. When my dad's screen fucked up he took it into apple and they told him they wouldn't touch it because he has 3rd party ram in there and not Apple ram. He agreed to have it switched out for Apple ram which cost something like 300 dollars and then they told him while his computer was being repaired that he had to "buy" a new laptop. So he seriously had to front upwards of 3000 or more to have his computer fixed ( and the thing still runs like crap). To top it all off, when he bought his computer he was asked if he wanted to upgrade his warranty to some shit called "Pro service". He agreed to it (it cost around 199) and figured his computer was covered under a 3 year apple warranty. When he took it in they told him he didn't have the upgraded Applecare and the repair would've cost him about as much as a new laptop. I can build a top of the line PC for around 1000 or less and it will last me 3+ years. I can ORDER a top of the line Mac for 1500 - 2000 and have it last 6 months. Do the smart thing folks. -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire."

Thank you for proving my point. It would be an equally priced machine. There is no "holy grail" PC out there that can do some of these things cheaper than a Mac. right, and there's nothing the mac does that makes video editing any better. Good point, but two things, I don't want to carry one more thing, my bag is full enough. Also, my ExpressCard port is usually filled with a SprintPCS modem. so... you carry a firewire 800 device with you "on the go" and edit movies and such from stuff in your bag? True, but I don't really care about rebooting. well... if you've got an intel based machine with typical PC type parts, running windows... is the thing really even a 'mac' anymore? Let me clarify, I don't know of any PC laptops that thin that have a built-in DVD burner/CD drive. I know of ones that have drives you can connect and ones that have horrible battery life. If you point me in the direction of one I'd gladly take a look at it because I am in the market for a light PC. I haven't really looked much lately except for quick research for this thread, but I believe it's fairly difficult to find any decent laptop that doesn't have a built-in DVDRW. I do have to agree with you, the Dell does come out slightly on top, though not by much. The DVDRW only matters to some people, but the RAM is a slightly big deal. The price difference is negligible (when you're spending $1500, $62 isn't much, but I do have to agree that the Dell would possibly be a better buy if you aren't looking at OS. well the RAM is a big deal, but to me the biggest deal is 2 extra years of warranty. And what happens w/the iMac when the monitor goes dead after the warranty is up? My whole point for posting this thread was to just point out that new iMacs are available. I could really care less what other people use. I am writing this on a Windows PC right now and I personally don't like it. Does that mean I will continually knock PCs? Hell no. well even though I don't do anything to help, as almost always w/these threads, I'm not the one that starts the trouble I don't see Vista as this huge, world changing thing, but apparently some do. I don't really either, but most PC companies let you choose XP if you want. I think the reason that Apple is so big on hardware is that originally their business was fitting processors, etc. into a neat little box, so they continue to try and do that. We have to admit, the main things people are doing with computers today are e-mail, photos, music, word processing, web browsing, and the occasional movie. The battle now is to appeal to those markets. I really don't think Macs or PCs have fulfilled the needs of the consumer, but when one does they will take the market quickly. I don't really follow you... every PC and Mac newer than like 1995 can do these things. People just wanna do those things faster is all. IMHO the next big revolution will be stuff like home servers, central home computer kinda things with good voice req/response. Same with cars. But yeah until then, the crap people wanna do doesn't really change, just the speed at which they wanna do it does. Again, I didn't post this thread so that we could argue about how stupid Macs are or how underpowered they are. You are in control of your pocketbook, not me. I simply stated an opinion on their look in the original post and nothing constructive (except impala's post) has been posted. /point Forsaken |

all part of presentation. the dell image is quite biased even with the extra wires.
just compare the dell and mac mouse cords. one neatly coiled, the other bent up and crumpled, then coiled. find me a better side by side comparison. -------------------- |

yeah bc everybody puts their computer on top of their desk. and where's the airport thing that comes w/the iMac? is it connecting to the internet wirelessly? I'd assume it is since there's only one cable going to the wall. oh yeah and everyone has a white desk and walls, where white cables nicely blend into the background. this is the stupid kinda shit that sells macs. i definitely gotta give them an A+ for their marketing schemes.

and generally its not the computer that clutters the desk. its the user.
from where i sit at my dell i can see two wires. the mouse and keyboard. its all the other crap that makes the desk messy. cds, paperwork, cups, manga, computer parts, glue, boxes, chainmail, robot toys, cds/dvds, stapler... all kinds of stuff. -------------------- |

yet another crappy product from a crappy company which is supposed to revolutionize the world. Haven't you people learned in the last 25 years that nothing Apple does is worth a shit despite their best intentions? The most useful Mac product that I've used has been their Apple TV. I haven't really seen any other product like it around. I use it all the time with playing mine and my roommates music/videos on our nice speakers in the living room for parties and stuff and if other party-goers bring their laptop it's a cinch to just "hook" them up to it. -------------------- ![]() |
