I don't think that's Spivey's argument. I think he's arguing that the "illusion of choice" is there because the two parties are very similar. I would argue that, while they're not THAT similar, the choice is an illusion because things only get done when the issue is something the two parties agree on; if they're at odds on it, they get deadlocked and nothing gets done one way or the other. This problem is exacerbated in a two-party system because candidates get more or less locked into one set of stances in order to appeal to the broader party base, regardless of how their personal views might differ. There is some fluctuation due to the preferences of their local constituents, but they still usually don't diverge much from the party line.

Right, but the only reason we have the two party system in the first place is because that's how the people themselves vote. There are several other parties and affiliations we have to choose from. It's not an illusion of choice, it's the choice that we as a population make.

I love San Marcos. I'm just saying that we're one of only a few places where Democrats and Republicans aren't trying to poison each other... with the exception of Rick Green throwing punches at State Representative Patrick Rose in the middle of a church parking lot. He's crazy.
