QUOTE (impala454 @ Mar 17 2006, 02:37 PM) Games mostly, but I do often have lots of other apps open. I'm getting 4 gigs for a couple reasons. Gonna run 64 bit windows, and preparing for the next windows that's coming out as well. 64 bit windows can address up to 16 TB. Basically I'd rather get all of the ram for the thing now, in matched pairs that were manufactured around the same time rather than getting 2GB now, then 2 later. On the video card... $300 is a fairly cheap, middle of the road card for games. If you're going uber high end those are on the order of $500 or more. 500W power supply because all these newer components need that juice, plus the whole preparing for the future stuff. I'm not building the entire thing from scratch, just mostly. I already have the case I'll use and a couple of other hard drives and an optical drive that will go in the thing. I highly recommend that case btw, very nice setup and roomy. Also never seen anything with a better hard drive location/setup. Basically I've got a little extra scratch and felt like building a monster system... haven't done that in a long time. Here's a pretty cool article on 64 bit windows performance on a dual-core system: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1857478,00.asp you might want to also invest in a INDUSTRIAL SIZED FAN to cool your venerable lava box or it'll start shutting down randomly |

heheh no crap... was thinkin about just puttin the big hard drives and stuff in a diff box on the network, that way this new one just has the vid card and one drive. that case has a hell of a cooling setup though.

Personally, I do not believe you NEED that level of equipment. a $1K system would be fine for you.
Games STILL have not caught up with the level of technology. No one wants to make two versions of a game and everyone wants the customers that cant afford a $1K computer. You might want to check the cost-benefit of the system. By the time something can utilize the amount of power the system can do, the prices would drop by half, atleast. |

well nobody "needs" even a $1,000 system. i didn't go all that much overboard, i usually look at the best of the best, which is usually insanely overpriced, then back it down a notch or two to the ones that have settled in price. I.e. i got a $330 processor, not the $900 one, I got a $300 video card, not the $600 one. if anything was overboard it was getting 4GB of ram, but like i said i wanted to get it all at once so it's all manufactured at the same time, same specs, same everything. and it will definitely be beneficial both now and when the new windows comes out soon. ram hasn't been changing much in price lately anyhow.

My computer runs games fine. I can link the wishlist from NewEgg if you want. Spring for a better video card and a faster processor if you really want to. Though my system runs pretty badass.
