Asphalt has less impact on you than concrete. I perfer dirt paths, but perfer not to ruin people's lawns. I should run back and forth in Chuck's parents yard. First 5 feet is public right of way!

all the roads around here are concrete

I think your best bet would be to get a walker and a Crown Vic and to throw your soiled depends at whatever makes you angry.

Wow. That must've been very expensive. I find it hard to believe though. It's a waste of money to pave residential streets in concrete as the load they take won't tear them up near as fast as major roads.

There's a bunch of concrete streets on my way to work too, on low traffic/residential roads. *shrugs*

hard to believe? i'd venture to say 90% of the streets in the entire greater houston area are concrete. and "it's a waste of money to pave streets in concrete because they last longer???!?!?!" blink.gif the logic baffles me here bud.

in fact, my nine years in lubbock was the first and only time i'd seen that insane amount of asphalt instead of concrete... /shrug

Concrete's very expensive, lasts about 30 years in a high traffic area.
Asphalt is very cheap, but lasts 3-5 years in a high traffic area.

In a residential area, asphalt becomes a lot more economical, especially when you consider that if you're using concrete, you have to pay for it up front.

But maybe there are problems with asphalt in the gulf region that makes it cost prohibitive. You also have a lot more money over there than we do out here. Hmm. Interesting anyway.

yeah it's somethin like that. humidity or somethin doesn't agree w/asphalt. i like it bc the roads are so nice and smooth (at least compared to west texas).

your right, asphalt falls apart really quickly in humidity.

is there some reason they couldn't use concrete in lubbock? that shit always baffled me... re-doing the damn streets every 2 years seemed like a waste to me... friggin 84 was redone twice in my time there.

Not as much money to front the cost. Concrete is a lot more expensive than asphalt. You have a lot more land tax to fund stuff like that down there in the higher population density areas.

For instance, when I was working for TxDOT one summer, we were up by I-40 while they were redoing it, and I'm pretty sure I was told it costs $30M per mile to build. I was given numbers for roads made from hot mix and it was significantly less.

right but having to redo the damn road every 3 years vs 30 years or more doesn't cost more? not to mention the inconvienence

It comes out about even. Again, the problem is funding. Yall have more to spend upfront than we do here. You have better grant proposal writers than we do here. If you pay for that 30 yr road with a loan with a high interest rate, then it becomes cheaper to pay for the 5 (closer to 5 than 3) yr road with no interest and using the money you have. And like you observed, we don't have the climate problems, so asphalt is a nice alternative here. Could be worse. We could just have dirt roads that are bladed every so often smile.gif
