You know what pisses me off. People who act like debt is the devil. As if you HAVE to get debt, its issued at birth, and the loan people OWN you.

If you cant afford to fucking buy something, THEN DONT BUY IT!!!
Cant afford a house and dont have enough stability to keep up payments (or enough money saved up to keep up payments in case you loose your job)? THEN DONT BUY A HOUSE!
Cant afford that fancy car? THEN DONT FUCKING BUY IT!
Cant afford that flat screen TV, THEN DONT FUCKING BUY ONE!
You got your ass into your debt mess and now you want to blame someone else, NO ONE MADE YOU SIGN THE CONTRACT!

um..yeah technically that is what he is saying but you know what he means

i dont get why people cant buy all this shit they cant afford....but whatever, its not my problem.

as for college education, it is one thing that cna be worth going into debt for (maybe a house or a business, but all of which can be considered investments)

there's nothing wrong with having debt, so long as you make your payments on time.

obviously it's good to pay it off when you can, but if you dont mind renting your stuff from the credit card company it doesn't really matter. especially with the kind of deals you can get nowadays. I got my big ass DLP TV on a three year no interest deal. how can you beat that? all you gotta do is not be a dumbass and miss a payment.

and obviously, car loans, school loans, and home loans do not even really count as "debt" in the sense most people discuss it. in general when someone says "omg I'm up to my eyeballs in debt" it's because they have $30,000 in credit card debt.

we had a friend who didn't understand how people could get into debt

we had to explain that people don't have magic money to buy things...especially if you're working minimum wage and can't save money

generally people don't have 40,000 bucks to go to a nice college and get a good degree

plus...people can go into debt for things other than credit cards

the biggest one is medical bills

From "The Prophet" -- Kahlil Gibran

On Buying & Selling

And a merchant said, "Speak to us of Buying and Selling."

And he answered and said:

To you the earth yields her fruit, and you shall not want if you but know how to fill your hands.

It is in exchanging the gifts of the earth that you shall find abundance and be satisfied.

Yet unless the exchange be in love and kindly justice, it will but lead some to greed and others to hunger.

When in the market place you toilers of the sea and fields and vineyards meet the weavers and the potters and the gatherers of spices, -

Invoke then the master spirit of the earth, to come into your midst and sanctify the scales and the reckoning that weighs value against value.

And suffer not the barren-handed to take part in your transactions, who would sell their words for your labour.

To such men you should say,

"Come with us to the field, or go with our brothers to the sea and cast your net;

For the land and the sea shall be bountiful to you even as to us."

And if there come the singers and the dancers and the flute players, - buy of their gifts also.

For they too are gatherers of fruit and frankincense, and that which they bring, though fashioned of dreams, is raiment and food for your soul.

And before you leave the marketplace, see that no one has gone his way with empty hands.

For the master spirit of the earth shall not sleep peacefully upon the wind till the needs of the least of you are satisfied.

went renting a place with others, never do anything except split every bill 50/50 or 33/33/33. you're just asking for trouble if you have one person pay one, another pay another, etc.

edit:
wow heheh this one is gettin good (just now read a bunch of it)

I pay 500 month, without bills. Got a good setup.

Dogmeat and I should come down and we have a big get together in Lubbock sometime next April.

friggin bingo. luckily you can treat medical bills like a red headed step child and let them go for months without paying, but you still gotta pay em eventually. it pissed me off i came down here, moved in w/the parents so i could store away tons of cash and pay off my credit cards, and then in the first two months i had $3500 in medical bills for something completely random and another $750 to my damn truck deductible bc it got struck by lightning.

yeah when bill, oliver, and erin stayed with me, i just charged them a flat rate all bills paid. it is really much easier if one person owns the place. but the whole "one person pays electric, another pays water, gas, another pays cable/satellite/internet" just doesn't ever work out.

but i got to add one thing
who on here after reading brandons posts would delve into being a roommate of his?

I have, I lived with brandon for over 2 years. He was overall a good roommate, he always had a job, always paid rent on time, and if he couldn't, which, if i recall correctly, was approximately twice, he gave us plenty of advanced notice, and paid back said debt asap. We might not have always seen eye to eye on things, but it worked out in the end. I wouldn't hesitate to live with him again.

As for if anyone has helped out like you have, i think I can say I have done so, not just financially.
I've helped Brandon out, as well as every roommate that lived with me out. Part of making a house/apt and the lease work, is communicating and working with your roommates. Sometimes shit happens. The reason its not a big deal, is that before ANY assistance was given, we all sat down, and discussed terms and conditions of the loan, once we all had something we could easily stick to, and agree upon, everything is good. Until those conditions are broken, no cause for harm.

I think with better communication, this whole ordeal could have been completely avoided.

Dont misunderstand, I'm not trying to start shit with anyone, but I agree with cathryn in the point that
-IF- there was an agreement to pay an amount of something, then it should have been paid, if there is proof it hasn't been paid, then deal with it on a face to face basis, if there is proof that it has been paid, then, again, deal with it on a face to face basis.

The internets, however fun drama may be, isn't the best place to solve problems.

best buy. they have great no interest deals all the time now it seems. the three year one seems to come on go every few months. i'll try and post whenever i see it. cool thing is, it's a best buy card thing. i.e. say you have a $4000 limit on your best buy card. the 3 year no interest deal is for TVs $999 and up. you go get your TV, now anything else you put on that same sales ticket is also subject to the no interest deal. when I bought my TV, I got my xbox 360, extra controller, 3 games, and the stand for the TV all at the same time, all under the same no interest deal. pretty sweet stuff.

just beware, if you miss or make a single late payment, blam your rate not only goes to regular (sky high), but you also get back charged for ALL interest you would have paid since you charged the items. i just set up my bank of america bill pay to auto-pay the thing every month so i dont even have to worry about it.

edit:
and one more thing, the way credit cards work, the highest interest items get paid off last. so say i bought my tv, xbox, etc and rang up a 3 yr no interest charge of $3200. now if i go later and just make a regular purchase (like 19% APR) of $200, my total balance goes to $3600. I will get finance charges on the $200, but as I pay off the balance, the $3200 no interest charge gets paid off first. so be wary of that as well. that is why lots of CC companies will have a huge nice 0% introductory rate, or say "make 3 purchases to be eligible for X", because they want to trap you like that.
