A criminal complaint accuses Kalidou Diallo of slipping a video recorder, video player and remote control into a sneak preview of the film at a Bronx theater on Monday night.

"This is the first time someone has been arrested and charged with the new illegal camcording law," City Hall spokesman Jason Post said Thursday.

In May, Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed legislation that upgraded film piracy from a violation with a $250 fine to a misdemeanor that carries up to six months in jail and penalties of up to $5,000.

Pirated movies cost major U.S. film studios more than $6 billion in 2005, according to the trade association. A study by the group showed that the New York movie industry loses an estimated $1.5 billion a year because of piracy

yeah f'n right. I'd like to see where the hell they came up with 1.5 billion. most people would have no clue how to get a pirated film. for easy numbers lets say each person spends $20 at the theater. they're saying there's 75,000,000 less customers per year in new york alone because of piracy?? I call major BS.

I wonder how much they cost themselves by continually releasing shitty movies.

in New York City all you have to do to get pirated movies is go to China town. Seriously, we went there on a choir trip in high school and they were selling pirated movies on the street for like 7 bucks.

um hi, I graduated from high school so I know how much 1.5 billion is, thanks for the visual anyways. I wasn't making any comment about the figures, I was just saying that pirated movies are easy to get in New York.

Yeah right... 1.5 billion? I wonder where the fuck they got that number from, they probably pulled it out of their asses.

I seriously doubt they lose 1.5 billion in one state in one year.

seriously the movie industry would do well to provide some other source of movies other than these big, shitty, overpriced movie theaters. i personally would pay $50 for a DVD of transformers if it were on the shelf at best buy right now. i want to see the movie but i have gotten to where i hate movie theaters. there's always a buncha stupid kids in there who think they're funny, people whipping out their cell phones that could double as searchlights, babies who can't even understand wtf is goin on in the movie (because they're a F'N BABY!). the places are dirty, not very comfortable, and the equipment in what used to be "new" theaters is getting old, the picture quality is starting to suck (still using film reels on 95% of the movies out there wtf!?!?). i've got a big ass 1080p TV with full surround and a sub that will shake the house next door, friggin put the dvd or hell even hd-dvd out on the market at the same time as the theatrical release, and charge a premium for it! hell even if people just have a little crap TV they'd prob still pay it just to avoid the damn theater.

I agree, too many asshats and idiots go to theaters. I usually have to issue an ass-whooping to at least 3 minority teens every time I go.

I saw screeners back when I first started as a freshman, but then I was introduced to SVCD and never took anything less again.

do you know what I mean by screener though? by screener i'm referring to a dvd screener, as in a dvd which is distributed to a group of people before the movie comes out (movie critics, journalists, etc). not some dude sitting at hte back of the theater w/a crappy digital cam. you used to be able to find dvd quality rips of these screener dvds. it used to be possible to find them of brand new movies even a few days before the release. last one i got was lotr two towers, 2 days before release wink.gif haven't seen any since. I heard they'd started embedding coded data into the movie itself so they could determine who's screener copy was leaked or something.
