QUOTE (rabble @ Mar 18 2006, 04:28 PM) which is why the have those hydrogen gas stations in california or something that run on "a garden hose and a solar panel" Just transport the water and turn it into fuel where you need it. Put water to hydrogen things in the garages of people's homes. I read it somewhere tha some of the things that turn water into hydrogen can acutally be fit inside the trunk of a car. Maybe I'm wrong takes electrolosis or extreme heat, both of which require large amounts of energy to free the hydrogen from water (Which freeing hydrogen from the water takes more energy than the actual hydrogen can produce itself). So even if you can get a small one, you still need the another plentiful fuel source to produce. |

here is a story on the first gas station to install hydrogen pump. Notice how at the bottom they say, for saftey, they only refuel the station at night or weekends for safety concerns: what happens when all the cars need hydrogen instead of gas? Gonna take a lot of trucks to fill up the station... and won't be able to be done during only night.
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6460036/ so i hope you are right about something simply using a garden hose and a solar panel... because doesn't look like anything short is a viable solution. hope im wrong though |

I think the countries that depend heavily on oil for trade will be more of a problem than the dwindling resources. How will they react?
Seems like it's going to give a good jump start to the nuclear energy industry. Then weapon development. Then the Cold War all over again. Then WW3? -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire."

Honestly, I don't think there would be that much of a problem if the US wasn't so dependent on cars for everything.

So you think we'll be just fine or be in for a bad spell before we get that up and running, or a REALLY bad spell? (Because all the evidence i've seen shows how woefully unprepared we are for oil to run out right now...with any alternative fuel) |

(Because all the evidence i've seen shows how woefully unprepared we are for oil to run out right now...with any alternative fuel) What evidence? I think in the short run we'll be fine... I think that serious innovation will need to happen in the next 50 years. You do realize that Montana and China are considered the Saudia Arabias of coal correct? Coal-to-liquids is cleaner than biodiesel, it's cheaper in the long run to produce and your engine does not need modifications. Right now the only thing standing in the way of heavy production of the stuff is tree-huggers who don't want open pit and strip mining to occur (which it won't). Hell, they are even going to use the bi-product, CO2, to help produce more oil from "dead" wells. Shell and China are working on the first coal-to-liquids production facility right now and Montana is set to start one as soon as they can get enough public backing. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |
