You can't make that comparison, Cathryn. The packaging is different. A good portion of that 12 pack of soda's cost comes from the packaging, individualized containers, and advertising. For that gallon of water, you have to bring your own gallon jug and you're just buying the water with no advertising and no packaging.
A bit fairer comparison would be to compare a 12-pack of Sam's Choice Bottled Water to a 12-pack of Sam's Choice Cola. Then the advertising and packaging costs are pretty similar. -------------------- Spam? Isn't that something poor people eat?

Individualized packaging is definitely easier and more convenient for parents - no glasses to wash, no time to pour, toss one in the gym bag/lunchbox.
It's not cheaper though. All that packaging is expensive compared to the product. -------------------- Spam? Isn't that something poor people eat?

I agree totally with Testmonkey on why kids become addicted to sugar, caffeine, tv and lets not forget, HUGE portions. When I was 8, I remember having to be told to at least finish the meat out of my Happy Meal ( on the rare occassion that we got them as a treat) because I almost never finished the whole thing, fries, drink and all.
I see elementary aged children all the time now who can finish an entire combo meal and still have room for a hot fudge sundae. Meanwhile, their parents are finishing off super size combos. I think portion sizes, and the average persons perception of a proper portion has really changed in the last 10 or so years. Parents are unknowingly serving oversized portions, and that's what children are learning to be normal. |

Here's an article that I think is related to why some kids are overweight today. They're not allowed to roam around and explore. That was one of my main activities growing up. If I was forced to stay in my yard I probably would've spent half the time outside I did. Especially places like where my parents live where the front and backyard aren't even big enough to play catch.

Yeah. I noticed that, too. When I was in 5th grade, my step-mom let me ride my bike to school. Last year, when my nephew entered 5th grade, she was very against allowing him to ride his new bike I got him for his birthday to school and he had half the distance to travel.
