can't seem to find too many recent articles, but read about it in my popular science. basically it's a mini cell tower that connects to your broadband connection. one of the google searches I did had an article saying Sprint will be offering these sometime this summer. pretty awesome though. what would make it extra super awesome is if they'd finish the job and let you connect it to some kinda router and use VoIP phones in your home with your cell service contract.

I'm actually pretty sure Sprint's new service plan with Comcast will allow you to do that through their home phone service (you can get a cell phone through comcast now).

i don't understand the usability of this

if you're buying this to boost cell phone signals...then you're probably in a remote area that's not really covered...

and if you're in a remote area not serviced by towers then the chances of you having broadband service are slim to none

you have a way higher chance of having high speed internet than a good cell signal. all you need for broadband internet is a regular telephone line.

LOL. So not true. There are many rural areas with lots of cell towers but no DSL/Cable service. My hometown finally got DSL service a year or two ago, but we've had cell towers for a long time since we have two major highways - US 287 and US 83 - going through. The same holds true for a lot of the counties that follow US highways and interstates but don't have cities with high populations that make it worth providing the service for these businesses.

well duh.. of course you get cell service next to the interstate. I'm not sayin this thing is awesome bc it brings cell service to timbuktu, I'm sayin it's cool if you have a bad signal in your home. I've got friends that live out in the country NE of houston, and while they do get a cell signal, it's terrible. they do get DSL though so this thing would be perfect for that type of situation. there are parts inside major city areas where signal sucks too.

the main thing that would interest me would be if they allowed you to set up phones in your house that would use your cell phone plan.

would that allow you to set up a "cell phone tower" in another country while using a sprint phone, so you dont have to pay international charges if you have a dsl connection?

this is actually a pretty good question.

One thing you might have to worry about it that the CDMA spectrum might be off-limits in some other countries, but shouldn't really be an issue.

Aside from that... That's a really good question.

I was looking up stuff on this again, and while I don't see anything else new about how to get them, I did find an answer to that old question:

Unfortunately, a GPS unit prevents the Samsung UbiCell from operating in areas where the network operator does not have licensed spectrum

so no you couldn't use it in a country where it's prohibited

So where is the part where they pay me for providing service to people using my "tower" because my broadband bill aint cheap and if they are going to use it all up then they better fucking compensate me.
