I updated firefox two weeks ago, and it hasnt been able to connect to the internet since I did that. So i was forced to use IE....and as of yesterday that stopped connecting to the internet. AIM still connects, so there is an internet connection there, I turned off the windows firewall, but still nothing as far as internet. I am running vista...if that helps any. Any suggestions?

Go turn that feature off. I don't know what Vista calls it, but it's probably denying your browsers access but not your messenger. Knowing MS, they probably made it separate from the Windows Firewall.

the UAM wouldn't affect IE, but yeah turning it off is the first thing I did upon installing vista.

maybe it's your connection or router settings messed up? I've noticed lots of times if my connection was messed up, my IM clients would still work (probably because they're on a different port).

what's your IE doing? mine messed up the other day with some bug and going to Tools->Internet Options->Security and unchecking "Enable Protected Mode" fixed it. but I think that was just browser specific because the other browsers still worked.

You know I've noticed some quirky things with Firefox lately too...

I go to maps.google.com and it shows the maps as "Loading" but they never come up. I go to reader.google.com and says the feeds are "Loading" but they never come up... weird.

Try re-installing firefox. I'm pretty sure you can do that with IE too, but I wouldn't know how in Vista.

Try going to 64.233.161.99 in your browser. You might have a winsock problem which is affecting your ability to go to webpages by Domain name. AIM might be trying to connect by IP address and thus working fine.

lol "a winsock problem which is affecting your ability to go to webpages by Domain name" do you have any clue what you're talking about? that's called DNS bud.

schwab, go to start->run, type in cmd and hit enter. then type cd\ and hit enter. then type ipconfig /all >> output.txt and hit enter. you should now have a text file in your c:\ root called "output.txt". open it up in notepad and paste it here.

Um, he's right though. You're very... wrong.

Well, right idea, wrong name, I suppose. Don't see how that could be the problem if it's only FF that's giving him the DNS errors though, as opposed to IE6/AIM.

In fact, AIM uses DNS to resolve servers as well. (oscar.aol.com or whatever. Actually, I think they switched protocols away from OSCAR, but whatever.)

I've actually had my AIM/ICQ clients use numerical addresses in the past for some reason. Don't remember where I saw that, but I experienced the same problems before. Don't remember how I fixed it though.
