When I log into the remote desktop on my windows xp box that's hooked up to this monitor it logs the current user out and the monitor displays the login screen. Is there anyway to have that monitor display what's going on when I'm logged in? Once I setup MCE on it and hook it up to a tv I want to be able to control it from a laptop and not necessarily with a remote.

Have you tried using Remote Assistance instead?

yeah RDP won't let you do that. I don't quite understand what you're wanting as the end result. you want to control the box with a laptop and view on the TV? or just be able to view the content on the laptop?

Yes, view the same thing on my laptop as the tv. So I can control the media center from my laptop but have it display on the tv. I figure if anyone's gotta know it's you.

kinda a strange way to do it, but you could prob do it with a software like PC anywhere. why wouldn't you just use the remote? or a wireless kb?

I just tried using Remote Assistance and it sort of worked, but it wasn't showing all the frames.

I looked into it but everything I saw said that the remote user had to accept. There's going to be no one at that computer though, it'll just be sitting by itself without a monitor.

VNC looks like it's a viable option as well.

so you're going to view the content on both the laptop and the TV at the same time? I'm still not really understanding.

I'm using VNC for it and it works well. Here's what I'm doing so I can give you the grand scheme of things. I'm hooking a bunch of X10 devices up to this server/media center. It'll give me automated lights and whatnot that can be controlled/programmed from the server/media center. On top of that it'll be hooked up to a tv so we can watch movies that we have on our hard drives. So I was looking for something that I can use to connect to that computer and run programs on it and whatnot. It's not so much the laptop is a remote but I just wanted to make it so I can control everything on that computer from my laptop. A side effect of that is I wanted to be able to start a movie from my laptop that'll run on the tv.

If it's still not clear I pretty much wanted to do what VNC does smile.gif

if you have a win2k3 server you can use Terminal Services -- I used to use it fuck with fellow students when I was an admin at my highschool.
