so, i'm somewhat familiar with military officer insignia, considerably less with the names of enlisted ranks, but was just wondering why certain levels are the same or different among the different branches.

for example (according to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Lieutenant), a second lieutenant in the air force/army/marines is the equivalent of an ensign in the navy, but would you refer to this naval officer as "ensign" or "lieutenant"?

also, a naval captain is quite a few levels higher than an air force/army/marines captain; would this be for any particular reason, or is that just the way it is?

i'm only asking because i am working heavily with usaa members from every branch; probably 95% of what i've experienced so far in the training has been current or former military.

Navy followed traditional Maritime ranking, and the Army did the traditional army ranking system. Air Force was once the Army Air Core, and branched out into its own service. Marines were considered army units onboard ships traditionally and were treated like army units.

The other Answer is that the navy swings differently :-P

Just out of Curiosity I found my friend's dad from my Spain Days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_K._Carlton%2C_Jr. I wonder what would of happened if I took the comission at the Air Force Academy...

navy gets their rank from oldass seafaring traditions. the "captain" of a ship is like a demi-god, and with good reason. the US navy captain is the equiv. to an army, af, marine full-bird colonel (O-6).

within that navy captain thing, you have two types of captains...those with a vessel under their command and those without. those without are always referred to as captain soandso...whereas the captain of a vessel is, no bullshit, affectionately referred to as "Skipper"...

"the Skipper's coming through the area, square that shit away! Good morning Skipper!"

LMFAO

that lil nickname has also crossdecked over to the marine infantry. our company commander is a captain (O-3, not O-6), and we call him "Skipper". I still giggle inside everytime I say skipper.

Army Air "Corps"...like Marine Corps.

not trying to be a nazi, the core/corps thing has long been an irk of mine.

it definately does happen. i was messing around with this girl named Heather. nothing serious, just a favorite fuck of the week kinda thing. she grew up on some base in either nevada or arizona. and we were chilling at her place while her family threw her little brother a birthday party. long story short we ended up fucking in her kitchen and she made me cum on her bowl of vanilla ice cream, then ate it when we ent back outside to the party in front of her parents.

(i may have crossed the line here on internet etiquitte but i have no idea or desire on how to make it more pg-13 heh.
