coming from a backgroud of hog hunting and trapping...all i got to say is...that kid has balls...He fucking chased down an animal that big on foot and (regaurdless of the fact that its a hand-cannon) used a handgun to bring it down. Those animals can rip someone apart like its nothing.

niether you nor zach really gets the point. it's not about throwing him into depression, it's the fact of realizing that he's already had the best.

if you lost your virginity to the playboy supermodel centerfold of the year, and then had to start fucking around with flat chested, average girls for the rest of your life... sure, you'd still enjoy yourself, but you'd be like "man, it's just not as good as that first time" if hog hunting is something he really enjoys, this will prolly interfere with that because every time he steps into that field again, he knows that he may bag something, but it will never be as good as it once was.
zach, if suddenly tommorow, you became the best, and ultimate MMA fighter. no one could even touch you, much less defeat you. EVER. wouldn't that kinda kill the competitive spirit you enjoy from it? the challange of defeating a worthy opponent, the gamble you take on each punch thrown or blocked? i seriously doubt you're the kind of guy that would take pleasure from jumping into the ring, and declaring " i win!" and then just step out again immediately.
mediocracy is it's own form of hell dude. and if you or zach can't understand that, then you've either never strove to perfection in something, or are lucky enough to not have achieved it.

Assumption after assumption.

So, by killing this he's "had the best"?

If he chose to break the law or not, in some cases) he could more wiley, dangerous game than this.

I think it's YOU that has missed the point, Brandon. No one is doubting that this is a major hunting accomplishment for the boy. But you're making it like it'll be hard for this kid to go on living because he bagged this large boar...i.e.- you're exaggerating a possible temporary feeling (feeling of being the king of the mountain).

whatever, if I had shot the biggest boar ever when I was 11, I would be stoked for a very long time. but then I would be kinda bummed when I was 30 and hunting and be like "well...it's no world record".

it's not about not being able to go on living, it's about having successive goals. I mean, what do you shoot for after this?

take kids who are given nice luxury cars in HS or college. what the fuck do they have to look forward to or work for?

they also tend to not value said car nearly as much as someone who earned it.

I think it won't really matter when he's hunting later. Hunting is largely a game of chance. Getting the biggest fish, boar, deer, etc. has nothing to do with how good a hunter you are. Some one who is the most skilled hunter doesn't have much of a better chance of bagging the biggest than a novice.

So i think in the case of the kid he'll always be proud he has the record, and will still enjoy hunting with no bothers. If he was a rookie in the nfl and scored the record for touchdowns AND THEN got injured and became mediocre, he might get depressed, but with games involving chance im not sure it would bother you that much.

I think the point he's trying to make is that stumbling upon the biggest fish, deer, boar, bear, whatever is strictly chance, which it kind of is, unless you're actually tracking the animals and using sources citing their location instead of sitting in a blind or a boat.

Now, whether you make the kill or it gets away is where the skill comes in. Seems to me, though, that killing a smaller version would be more challenging than a larger version since the target's not as big.

depends on how you hunt .... remember that shit we were talking about last time I was there where the guy was bow hunting a grizzley?

now THAT is fucking hunting ...

I don't consider "hunting" baiting deer then shooting them with $5,000 rifles plated with silver while you drink beer from a $50,000 4wd then take your $12,000 4-wheeler tearing up the country side with it to drive your fat ass to the deer you baited and shot from 700 yards away with a fucking laser sight, etc ....

if people wanna get a thrill from killing something join the fucking military.... seriously....heh smile.gif

agreed.

who here that is talking about hunting has actually killed anything weighing more than 300lbs?

I would pay to see someone stumble across a large mule buck or old ass boar and just shoot it by chance. they get big because they are smart and know how to move undetected and avoid you.

If you're in a blind you have to be like a silent statue. they see your bigass tower, they're not stupid...you so much as sniffle and you'll never see anything except maybe some dumbass unwitting young doe that isn't worth it (to me). I'd much rather walk his trails, learn his habits, where he beds and fucks, and patterns of a buck for a couple years then go head out to get him one day that you're feeling "it".

sitting in a blind and getting a buck is harder than you'd think. I've never done it.
