I drive a 2002 Toyota Echo. Generally gets about 35 mpg, though I've seen it do 37 on one tank. I just had my air filter replaced, so I'll probably see an increase in fuel efficiency from that (hadn't been changed since I got the car a year and a half ago, dunno exactly when it was last replaced).

This post is full of long replies that I'm not going to read because I'm lazy. That being said I think it's funny that cars get such shitty mileage now.
I drive a 1973 plymouth duster, it's a big muscle car. With the original carb, it got 32mpg highway and 29 city. Even with the two deuces I put on there I still get about 25 in the city, but my highway suck ass. When my friend got his 70 chevelle with the 2bbl it got about 18mpg. What gives? Why are cars so shitty in gas mileage now when they have things like fuel injection with perfect air fuel ratio? |

That thing got like 8 miles to the gallon, so it's not like they just made cars more efficient back in the day. -------------------- LANCE IS PRO-CENSORSHIP! HE IS CENSORING MY LOVE FOR THE LORD!

You'll get better mpg if you remove the catalytic converter, I think it was. I have had it offered to be done, but I'm not too concerned about my mileage. Obviously, you can't have this done if you live in the cities that inspect for that, but the rural cities don't check it.

The current spike in prices has nothing to do with supply and demand, it has to do with the refinery capacity and the current economy. I figure we'll see gas drop below $2.50 at the end of summer (with no huge natural disasters or refinery problems). There is currently no incentive for oil companies to build refineries, it's not a money maker. Simply bringing the oil out of the ground makes the money, so why do anything else? Oil prices haven't really gone up, only gas prices. Ya i heard on the radio that the problem is refining capacity. We have more oil than we can refine. |

Ya i heard on the radio that the problem is refining capacity. We have more oil than we can refine. From what I have heard, the "problem" is refining capacity, but the reason for that problem is that there is no reason to make more refineries. The companies make a lot of money off of their product, increasing supply would lower their demand and it's counterproductive to business. From the little bit of research I have done, they do have to shut down some refineries seasonally because you will use different gasoline in the winter season than you do in the summer seasons. I've also heard that the "oil shortage" is greatly over exaggerated and we have enough oil left on this planet to last many more lifetimes. *I'm not an expert on this subject, so I'm just repeating what i've found out in a little bit of research. -------------------- LANCE IS PRO-CENSORSHIP! You do not make any fucking sense at all by stating that "refining doesn't make any money whatsoever, it's exploration and production that do" .... what in the _FUCK_ are you talking about? How in the ***FUCKING WORLD*** do you make money by "exploration"? Seriously dude once you've thought about this one, come back and tell me, because the way you prosed that statement makes me wonder what you're smoking. "Hi, we're Exxon, we just spent 8 billion dollars on an explorative project in the gulf that didn't yield one flowing well! We made MILLIONS off that!" You can't look at it in the terms you're trying to look at it. You have to look at everything in the big picture. If you never explore to find new petroleum, you never have any production, ie, produced petroleum, and then in turn you _NEVER_ have a product to sell. The only customers you're gonna have selling unrefined crude are maybe that of ship companies who can use barley refined crude as fuel oil. So again, explain to me how it is you only make money off spending billions of dollars to find new petroleum reserves and then flowing it out of the ground? What good is unrefined crude or natural gas sitting in storage tanks? Nothing. If you don't refine crude into gasoline, how the hell are you gonna make any money off the billions you spent exploring for it and producing it? Doesn't make a lick of sense to me You made a hell of a lot of money producing that oil and not refining it! YAY! Think about how many products you can get from cracking a given barrel of oil ... Obviously gasoline is going to be your single largest profit because of the sheer volume of it you are gonna produce. If refineries made so much money off slanging the other shit, then why are we not running cars with 110 octane jet fuel? If they make more money off that why not sell more of it? . My point is, the oil companies don't care about the end product, they care about getting it out of the ground and getting that sweet $65 a barrel. All the rest is icing on the proverbial knife that cuts the cake. Using exploration was probably the wrong example, exploration and production (but not exploration alone) are what make the money. At Shell and ExxonMobil our goal was to get as much out of the ground as possible. After that, we didn't care where it went, whether it was used in olefins or shipped off to make coke. You are absolutely right, we need refineries, however, they are simply a product maker, not a money maker. The trading floor is full of people trading oil at $65 a barrel... Refineries will not get the added capacity that they need till Americans wake up and smell the coffee and realize that NIMBY needs to go out the window (I am right with you there Dogmeat). I am just trying to throw in my experience in the refining process and chemicals side of things. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |
