Three years later, Congress decides to actually do their jobs instead of being Bush's rubber stamp....

So if they decide that it's bad to be there, are they going to pull our troops out and send Iraq into decades of civil war? Waste of money.

Well, I'm not neccessarily saying that they should decide that it's time to pull our troops out. I'm saying that one of Congress's essential duties is oversight, which they haven't been doing other than a bipartisan study into the causes. It's just a good idea to make sure that someone's out there reviewing what Bush is doing and ensuring that he's exercising the best judgement.

this will accomplish nothing aside from wasting more tax dollars debating something that has already happened. i bet the $1.3 million is gone by july but they keep "working" hard (to get their names in the paper).

oh and while we're at it, how about we re-count the election ballots again?

As many controversies of conflicts of interest and poor decision making when it comes to Iraq, you honestly mean to say that you don't think the whole thing could benefit from legislative oversight?

Although I agree and disagree with some of said controversies, that really isn't the point. Rumors have been flying around with little to no verification and even less is being done to correct them if there are problems.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Congress unveiled an independent panel on Wednesday assigned to study the U.S.-led war in Iraq and to make policy recommendations for both Capitol Hill and the White House.

This isn't a group meant to cry over spilled milk. Their purpose is to study the occupation of Iraq and make policy reccommendations to the Bush Admin.

we shouldnt have gone to this war in my opinion. on the other hand, i think thats the only thing i have disagreed with. other than sending us there in the first place, bush hasnt done that much wrong during the war. I think we should stay there until its stable enough for us to leave. The war in and of itself does not need to be studied. The only thing that should have maybe been studied is why we went there in the first place. Its already in the past though. I think "studying" the war is just going to lower morale for the troops over there that are doing a good job. if we study this, it would be like telling them that their effort was for nothing. at least thats how i see it.

look what all that studying of 9-11 did.... oh wait...not a god damn thing. their going to waste tax dollars just to tell us what we already knew. in the case of 9-11, they tell us that we arent as safe as we thought we were. WELL NO FUCKING SHIT. its a shame that they are doing this. a real shame because nothing will come of it except common sense statements and wasted tax dollars.

How so? If your boss checks your work at your job, does that make you feel as though it was for nothing?

No, it tells you your boss is interested in ensuring that you're doing your job correctly.

Lastly, while you may feel that the war is being run correctly, there are plenty of people who would disagree with you, and make some valid points (admittedly, some of the issues are exagerated though). Are we just going to run everything based on hearsay or are we going to get to the root of the problem and find solutions? I don't know about you, but I prefer the latter.

there is no answer though. seriously, this all politics. i can say that i firmly believe that this "study of the war" is motivated with a purely political agenda. how else should a war be run? its a war!!!!! bad shit happens. we arent nuking towns and shit.

look, i KNOW for a fact that a lot of the soldiers over there already have low morale because of what the media has been saying. im not saying I know more here than anyone else, but I was in a relationship with someone while he was in Iraq and when he just came back. He was in the most active unit in the army over there. A lot of them feel as if they are there for no reason. I dont see how this helps at all.

I would see the need for an assessment had Congress proven over the years that they could come up with positive and intelligent recommendations for the future. Its been my opinion that they havent. I agree with Mr. Lament on this one: it would be just like recounting the fucking ballots. Just let it go, finish the job to create a stable environment, and bring our troops home. Then, if they want to sit around with tea and biscuits and bitch about the past, so be it.

I know how difficult it can be to accept that when a person's opinion disagrees with yours that doesn't automatically invalidate it, but it's good thing to do.

But do you honestly mean to tell me the war has been perfectly run up until now? And are you honestly meaning to tell me there's absolutely nothing that can be done to improve the occupation?

1) They're in a war zone. They're not exactly going to be happy to be there.
2) You want to improve morale by telling everyone the war is going perfectly when it's not? If there are issues going on, be honest about them.

Which is exactly why Congress is creating an independent group to study the war and make reccommendations for improving it. Yes, there's going to be politics involved. But unfortunately, we live in a country goverened by politicians. That's the nature of the beast. It's like Winston Chuchill said "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried."

Of course the war is not being perfectly run. I dont think anything is being run perfectly in this world. My point is is that why cant they worry about the problem at hand right now: stabilizing Iraq so we can bring our troops home. Dont you think that is a little bit more important right now than analyzing past mistakes. No, analyzing what has happened thus far will not bring our troops home any faster because I believe their real agenda is what I quoted in bold by Mr. Baker.

My point is that Congress is going to make a bunch of assenine comments like "well we shouldnt have gone over there in the first place blah blah blah" in which case not only will the media be bashing what the soldiers are doing but also their government will be. Thats what I see this boiling down to: us initially going to war. I could very well be wrong, but it seems that congress hasnt done much so far to help with things in Iraq. What would be different now? Most likely not a god damn thing.

They should know that their political and personal agendas are not as important right now as the lives of both Americans and Iraqis (SP?). Im just saying that I wish they could pull their heads out of their politically motivated asses long enough to see the reality. The reality is this: unless a person has been there and fought, they dont know whats trully going on. How can they comment on things they havent really lived. I mean, are they even going to interview people that have been over there?
QUOTE
He wants a "second opinion" about the war from a well-known and respected group of Americans -- all of whom long involved in public service.

That sure doesnt say that they are going to talk to people that have served in Iraq, much less the military for that matter.
QUOTE
Hamilton said the group will travel to Iraq and may produce interim reports before issuing a final report but he declined to give a timeframe

They are going to travel there and get great treatment and still not know what its trully like over there. I just see it as a waste of time and money. Its whatever though. There is obviously nothing I can do about it because its already been set into motion. I really do hope that they come up with some information that really will be relavent and useful, but I seriously doubt it. I honestly do hope that I am proved wrong.

Yup. Still a dumb idea. I'd rather give money to Jessica Simpson's organization than this, and her organization seems pretty damn pointless, too.
