speaking of the "pr0n" thing.... whats up with saying "pwned" instead of owned...is it because the letter is so close to the "o" on the keyboard? and why is porn spelled pr0n. I get the zero, but not why the letters are reversed.

I cant believe some of you are saying that Brokeback Mountain is ok to show at school. Honestly, I think the only reason that Pebkac is saying that is because he himself is gay... yeah, I said it. Honestly, it is fucking ridiculous. If a kid wants to be gay, fine; but in my opinion the gay community is trying to rally as many people to their community as possible, as seen in this thread by Pebkac. What happened to letting kids be innocent minded? I can guarantee that if the teacher had shown some movie like Unfaithful Pebkac would be bitching. I dont think anything should be shown to children that is sexually suggestive. We have enough problems with teen pregnancy and high STD rates that we dont need to show sex at school. Get over your attitudes that kids need to see this kind of stuff to be educated on the outside world. Part of the fun of being a kid is the innocense that is associated with it. You can guarantee that I would go the school board and whoever else if my 8th grade family member had been shown that movie. I'm not gay. I support gay endeavors, because they're JUST PEOPLE like us. I hate society because it has to be "they" and "us" and not just "we." That's for another thread though. However, for this thread, I ABSOLUTELY feel that it's ok to show parts of this movie. There's no need to waste three whole days of class to show the whole thing, but there are several scenes which could serve to spark discussions, and do so without submitting kids to soft porn. But, at what age is it ok to break the bubble of "innocent-mindedness?" If it's not middle school, then high school? Does that one summer in between all of a sudden grant kids some maturity rite of passage? Innocence is for four year olds that take naps. Not for eighth graders, many who have been exposed to a hell of a lot more, including murder, rape, incest, sex, alcohol, violence and crime (as sad as it may be.) To censor one subject on the idea of "protecting their innocense" is to insult many of these kids' intelligence or morality. This is the age that they will have to make those tough decisions (vandalize a property with your friends or stay home on Friday night) and this is the age that these discussions need to be happening, to PREVENT these things from happening. I know you love your brother, NO ONE on here can deny the fierceness of which that's true, but as you have pointed out, he has a mental hindrance. I'm not saying he's any less valuable to society, but you can't honestly base your feelings of what's right for the entire eighth-grade population because of how protective you are of him. Thats what sex ed is for. Showing them a sexually promiscuous film isnt beneficial to their development. It's sexually permiscuous because it's two men? -------------------- Forget regret

It's sexually permiscuous because it's two men? let me get this straight...because YOU think kids need exposure to this stuff, you think it is acceptable to show an R rated movie to 8th graders? and a fairly controversial one at that. I hope you don't have aspirations of being a teacher. if you do, better get a damn good lawyer. |

I just honestly couldn't see any positive or beneficial discussion following the showing of this movie. and this is all besides the fact that the teacher came in and said "what happens in ms blah's class, stays in ms blah's class" before showing the movie. It's sexually permiscuous because it's two men? from imdb: QUOTE Rated R for sexuality, nudity, language and some violence. I don't see "Rated R for gayness" |

my thoughts..... fuck censorship. kids will see it eventually, to think that we as adults have any control over what they will and will not see when the media tries to force it's self down our throughts all the time is idiotic. we are pretending that by limiting one very small aspect of our childrens interaction we can change what they are exposed to. i am not in support of this movie in the classroom, the classroom should be used for something other than "movie day" what i am saying is, instead of bitching about teachers and blaming the problems on them, focus on the advertisement companies, and television shows , billboards and junk mail that force themselves on us everyday without our consent. if you want to pretend you're being an active parent and throw a fit about this in the school, but sit back and don't do anything else about the real problems, you are just kidding yourself and your children will still be exposed to the same amount of filth no matter what. you can't hide it from them... the only thing you can hope to do is guide them, help them understand (help them and tell them are 2 WAY different things) so that they may deal with the changing world responsibly.
