There are a lot of reasons why people join up to fight for something they don't believe in, the number one (IMO) is the fact that they have some pull in what exactly they end up doing. If you get drafted, things are laid out for you. If you join, you request things and have the possibility of becoming a desk jockey.

getting drafted would suck ass.
end up being a sanitation specialist or some other miserably lame shit that no one wants to do. nowadays, the infantry quota stays filled. there's a waiting list for that MOS. says something about this generation of motivated killers LOL |

I clicked "wouldnt fight at all" before I read the thread. I have often times considered joining the military mostly because its good money coming out of school. I know Im a girl, but I think that the general morale of the soldiers are low when a draft is enforced, unless our national security has directly been attacked (like in the case of Pearl Harbor). If I were a guy, I would join before the draft. I think that its important to protect our rights, and oil is a definite necessity in our society. We just went about this war the wrong way.

I've thought about joining the military a couple of times, and even took a couple of tests for a couple of different branches of service, but in the deep corners of my mind I knew I was never going to sign on the dotted line.
At this point in my life, the military is essentially a career option if things don't work out at my current job. Now, if an actual country attacked us Pearl Harbor-style sometime in the near future? I'd probably go sign up right away. EDIT: My views on Iraq are complicated. I took what the White House said about WMDs in the year leading up to the war at face value, and supported their efforts to go and remove them. Obviously, now I do not support the reasons for the war but am against just pulling out. Regardless of the reason, we got into this mess, so we might as well finish it. |
