If you support the war would you be willing to fight in it if needed? Be perfectly honest.

"grunts" means infantry...officers can be grunts (my dad was a grunt officer). the term is a badge of misery and honor we hold dear. recall the movie 'aliens', where that guy says "corporal hicks is just a grunt...no offense"..."none taken". it's like that yo... wink.gif

Thanks for clearing that up. I have no problem being on the ground and leading a platoon, but would much rather be an officer than the guy kicking in the door wink.gif

And yes, I agree, the gunnery sgts have a lot more "real world" experience just because they have to to do their job.

There are a lot of reasons why people join up to fight for something they don't believe in, the number one (IMO) is the fact that they have some pull in what exactly they end up doing. If you get drafted, things are laid out for you. If you join, you request things and have the possibility of becoming a desk jockey.

getting drafted would suck ass.

end up being a sanitation specialist or some other miserably lame shit that no one wants to do.

nowadays, the infantry quota stays filled. there's a waiting list for that MOS.

says something about this generation of motivated killers LOL

few...if any 22yr old boot Lt.s have quality leadership experience. That's what OCS, TBS, and then your NCO's are for. In combat arms, E-4's (Corporals) require much more real-world experience than a boot Lt. "the strategic corporal" (google it) is who runs the modern ground war.

Interesting read.

I clicked "wouldnt fight at all" before I read the thread. I have often times considered joining the military mostly because its good money coming out of school. I know Im a girl, but I think that the general morale of the soldiers are low when a draft is enforced, unless our national security has directly been attacked (like in the case of Pearl Harbor). If I were a guy, I would join before the draft. I think that its important to protect our rights, and oil is a definite necessity in our society. We just went about this war the wrong way.

oh I totally agree, but you have to be insensitive to your own moral obligations. just seems it would be detrimental to your job. And the option really kinda contradicts itself as far as supporting/not supporting the war. it reminds me of all the politicians who came out with their "I don't support the war but I support the troops" BS. it just doesn't make much sense to me... what support are you showing someone, by rejecting everything they do?

I've thought about joining the military a couple of times, and even took a couple of tests for a couple of different branches of service, but in the deep corners of my mind I knew I was never going to sign on the dotted line.

At this point in my life, the military is essentially a career option if things don't work out at my current job.

Now, if an actual country attacked us Pearl Harbor-style sometime in the near future? I'd probably go sign up right away.

EDIT: My views on Iraq are complicated. I took what the White House said about WMDs in the year leading up to the war at face value, and supported their efforts to go and remove them. Obviously, now I do not support the reasons for the war but am against just pulling out. Regardless of the reason, we got into this mess, so we might as well finish it.

the important part is in bold.

I can only speak for the way things were in my unit, but we were of a certain mindset, which was far removed from any moral anything. if we were told to invade frickin canada, we would have been stoked just for the fight.
