QUOTE (lamont's lament @ May 7 2007, 11:03 AM) *
that says nothing about the best state economy.

heh.. so forbes listing texas as the #2 best state for business doesn't say anything about the state's economy?

"highest earning cities", "fastest job growth", "best places to live" lists don't say anything about the state's economy?

QUOTE (lamont's lament @ May 7 2007, 11:03 AM) *
and where are the lists for highest crime,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States...s_by_crime_rate
For cities greater than 250,000 pop in 2005:
17. Dallas, TX (#9 in population)
18. Houston, TX (#4 in population)
41. Ft Worth, TX (#19 in population)
48. San Antonio, TX (#7 in population)
so these cities are among the largest, however have much lower crime rates

QUOTE (lamont's lament @ May 7 2007, 11:03 AM) *
most disgustingly obese people, pollution levels, lowest education, highest number of welfare recipients, worst drivers, most intolerance (religious, sexual, and racial)?

obese people - how would you rank this? BMI? so is this really one of your criteria for determining how "good" a state is?

pollution levels - granted, cities like houston & dallas rank very high, but if pollution makes a state shitty, you'll have a hard time finding many states to put on your "good" list.

lowest education - i'm not really sure how education is a quantity. state education spending? % graduation rates? colleges & their figures? perhaps you can enlighten us with some details on what makes texas a "shitty" state as far as education is concerned.

worst drivers - this is completely opinion

most intolerance - again, how exactly do you quantify this?

QUOTE (lamont's lament @ May 7 2007, 11:03 AM) *
all of those "best places" lists totally fucking cancel each other out. so houston and dallas have a shitload of violent and white-collar crime, but plano and sugarland are safe and happy? no way. you get all the city scum no matter where you live.

well you've obviously never lived in a big city then, because that's exactly how it is. I work in Houston and live in a suburb (very simliar to sugarland). And yes, the pollution & crime in the suburbs is no where near that of the city. You get the best of both worlds, large nice houses in great communities for good prices, and the job growth and economic success of a major city.

it's interesting to me how you talk about texas being so shitty, and ask for data on its economy, and then when I post the data you revert down to stuff like homo-tolerance and items you can't possibly quantify to compare to other states. it'd be great for you to go ahead and give some data to show just how shitty texas is, and which states are not "shitty" by your standards. am I saying Texas is the best hoo-rah get the fuck out? no (well i think it is but that's just my opinion). but by the numbers, texas is a damn good place to live, and is definitely not "shitty".

QUOTE (lamont's lament @ May 7 2007, 11:18 AM) *
just as an example, how are no texas cities (categorized by large and small metro ares) listed in the top 25 on this other forbes poll, the "best places for business and careers," when texas is the second best state for business?

http://www.forbes.com/lists/2007/1/07bestp...reers_land.html

maybe it shows that forbes isnt as good a source as we thought

once again though, is the state's debt what you look at in determining a state to live in?

Yeah, I actually read that article while I was doing my search before posting. Kind of weird how the 2004 numbers from that article differ from the 2004 numbers from http://www.osc.state.ny.us/reports/debt/de...fordability.pdf Oh well.

well lamont was right in a sense, i mean, you can go find data and rank any state in just about any position. but imho it's the quality of life and economics that matter most. but i suppose if what matters most to someone is homo-tolerance, texas probably isnt the best state laugh.gif

this is exactly what people care about, though. a true personal quality of life really can't be measured by just available jobs and income, it includes how many obese neighbors or fucking crack heads you have living in your area. you can take info from any angle, and i guess you can post all the "great" stuff you want, but that's not going to change anyone's opinion. texas is just an all around shit package, and i honestly can't believe anyone with the slightest bit of education and non-conservative ideals would enjoy being here.

and i thought some of you had jobs, but i must be mistaken.
