so that the armed person can snap and go on a killing spree? I'll pass on that.

Israel has very few (if any) major incidents involving crazed gun toting maniacs... The possibility that someone around you has a gun and will fight back is something that can deter. No matter what people say, most killers do not have a death wish themselves and if there is a possibility that they may not escape, they may not commit the crime.

This is the psychology behind the air marshal program.

This isn't even about response times, the reason being, the first shooting was thought to be a "routine" homicide, so there was no lock down, just an investigation and a continuance of daily life. Was this the correct thing to do? Under the circumstances, yes. You wouldn't lock down a 40,000 person town because of a murder, you'd start to investigate and keep your eyes out for possible perpetrators.

Can you imagine if they locked down Texas Tech if someone was murdered in Coleman. These officers had no idea what was going to happen, so after it was determined that a murder had occurred the officers went back to their normal duties, then the second shooting started.

I would like to think that if someone was murdered in Coleman Hall, Texas Tech would go on lockdown. A murder is serious. I know that they assumed it was a domestic incident, but they still should have had a faster, better way to communicate to the students. One murder is more than enough reason, in my mind, to act.

Given the incidence/seriousness of school shootings in the past, the school should have went on lock down immediately.

A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

I highly doubt they would lock it down. The manpower required to do such a thing would be more than the force could handle (while at the same time trying to catch the killer, investigate, etc.).

Just like when there is a murder in Lubbock, they may block off part of a street, but they don't close off neighborhoods, they search them though.

armchair, hindsight quarterbacking aside...

locking down a major university campus during peak hours (weekday morning) seems like a logistical nightmare.

thats what i was thinking.... either you need to restrict guns completely, or let everyone have them.

anyone else notice how shootings tend to occur where guns are "not allowed" ?

You shouldn't be allowed to have a gun on school premises. Why the fuck would you need one, to shoot pigeons? This type of incident is not an everyday occurrence, so having everyone carry their peace at all times anywhere would be utterly ridiculous and irresponsible to the Nth degree.

...and I'm actually a strong 'pro-gun' kinda guy. *shrugs*

on a related note, I wonder how much more effective communication would have been if they had sent out a warning on facebook. I also can't believe that there isn't more ability to communicate cross-campus. I would think that a phone call would have been made to every building alerting them that someone was shot in the dorm and the shooter has yet to be apprehended.

druge report is saying that he lined them up and shot them execution style, but the girl who had to "play dead" inside the classroom said he "stepped 5 feet inside the door and started shooting everyone in the class".

DR is the only place ive heard the execution theory...heresay?

no one really knows how it went down except for the people in the classroom. The one person who could possibly tell the whole story accurately is dead (good riddance) and it's clear that alot of the people on the scene, i.e. cops, students, teachers don't really know exactly what happened.

So has anyone else seen reports that the gunman apparently shot himself?
