My question is this: I can get both programs for free. The problem is that the computer I'm installing AV software on is limited in the memory it has and Symantec takes up twice as much as AVG (at least according to the system requirements). Now I hear that symantec is a better product, but is it really worth the memory it requires?

AVG is actually really good. symantec pretty much sucks now. if you really want good, memory-friendly antivirus, get kaspersky. I think AOL even has a free version that they've branded all over. It consistently scores the best on detection and definitions etc.
