What would you consider a good GRE score? I just took it and I'd kind of like to gauge how I did.

Really Depends on your major as well. I mean, a grad school usually looks at a lot more than just the GRE scores (letters of recommendation, academic performance during your undergrad/GPA, etc.)...

...That being said, I got an 1100 or an 1140...can't remember (don't have the scores with me presently).

The letters of rec plus my academic performance (should graduate with a GPA in the neighborhood of 3.5-3.75) should net me a decent school for my Master's and eventually my PhD.

ive been told by some of my professors GRE scores count more than your GPA thus are fairly important. your major gpa but specifically your last 60 hours count the most. (in the realm of gpa)
its the same kind of scale as the SAT so a good SAT score is a good GRE score and people tend to do +/-100 points from that. some graduate schools will state what kind of scores they are looking for

QFT

I know that political science and public administration schools seem to focus more on previous academic performance, research skills, and letters of rec. A lot of the places I looked at want aminimum 960 or so GRE.

But a great GRE will open a lot more doors for you irregardless.

I got a 1360, same as my SAT score. I had a high enough GPA, though, that my score probably didn't matter all that much. 1100, 1200 is probably what you should be shooting for if you want your score to be considered pretty good.

i thought a good GRE score would be a lot higher than 1100

i am trying to slowly prepare for mine now. im going to be taking it in october but i cant get myself to start looking at my books.

for the people that did prepare, how did you go about doing it? i have the kaplan math and verbal books and they seem really good. i just cant get myself to look at them

for me to be comfortable with my chances to get into the graduate school i want i need at least a 1300 on my GRE. ill have above a 3.0 gpa, lab experience, pretty good letters of recomendation, a leadership role in an organization, and work experience in a relevant field. and im told thats barely enough. you people make graduate school seem way too easy

it all just depends on your department

i had an average GRE, average GPA, but I had good research experience and letters of rec., and was still one of only 3 people accepted for this fall

also depends largely on what school you're heading from/to. i.e. if you did undergrad at tech and are trying to get into a different school for grad school your GRE will matter more than if you were applying for grad school at tech. basically each school will know the undergrad programs at their own school better than some other school.

if you get a 1300 PLUS what you mentioned, you will be just fine.

I've still got to send off my app to UT/LBJ...
Stellar letters of rec + professional research experience + 3.752 GPA + 1100 GRE (yeah, I suck...not) = what I hope is acceptance.

Just look over everything broadly at first and see which things give you the most trouble after a couple of practice tests. Then, study those sections like crazy. Take many, many practice tests.

Back when I took it, a 550 Verbal got you in the 72% and a 780 Quantitative got you in the 87%. Not sure what the writing got you because I completely skipped that portion. There doesn't seem to be a cumulative percentile.

The most important part about preparing for these standardized tests is knowing the format and scoring procedures for the test. The actual material is something you already know or should know. It really is an easy test, so don't sweat it. With a decent gpa, letters of recommendation (though I don't recall ever having these for graduate school), and some kind of experience (didn't have this either...Tech's too easy to get into), the GRE won't matter much.

im wanting to go into a really competitive graduate school. unfortunately ill be heading in with 200+ people with probably 50% having nearly the exact same qualifications i have. pre interview - a high GRE score unfortunately may be the deciding factor
