So last night when I opened my laptop, the right hinge broke. Now I have to compute with one hand while the other holds the screen up so it doesn't fall backwards. Looking at it, it appears as though something is actually broken, so it's not like I can just snap it back into place.

Is this something that I can fix/replace? I don't want to take it somewhere if there's nothing that can be done.

I don't have the money for a new one right now and don't really want to pay it even if I did because the hard drive and everything about it is working except for the one hinge. Is there such a place that I can buy the shell of the computer and then just insert my hard drive?

naw you can't really buy the case for a notebook. there are home built notebooks, but I'm assuming you have a dell or HP or something, and they're proprietary. it may be a fairly common thing and they can repair it, but kinda doubtful (at least it wouldn't be cheap). only thing I could tell you on the cheap is get ya a string smile.gif

do you have a warranty/protection plan from the company?

even if you don't, it's worth a shot to call their customer service to see if they'll fix it. i'm sure if you freak out on the phone they'll do it for free.

It's a Toshiba notebook I bought in January of '04. Any warranty I had would be expired by now. I might try the phone thing. It'd be worth a shot anyway.

get a small cabinet hinge that will lay thin and flat, and some super glue.

i got a 3-year warranty with my dell. expires this year. I'd double-check on the toshiba warranty. They're usually pretty good about fixing shit too.

And believe it or not, the cases don't really cost all that much to fix. As long as it's not actual hardware, it won't break the bank.

WAIT. I'm not finished.
