QUOTE Gov. Rick Perry's executive order has inflamed conservatives who say it contradicts Texas' abstinence-only sexual education policies and intrudes into family lives. Some critics also have questioned whether the vaccine has been proven safe. The House voted 118-23 on Wednesday to approve a bill that would keep the vaccine off the list of required shots for school attendance. The measure now heads to the state Senate, where more than half the members are co-sponsoring an identical bill. "Dammit. It's our right as Texans to let our children get cancer-causing infections if we want to!" -------------------- Holy shit, pebkac, you're awesome! It's a double-edged sword really.
Yes, the vaccine is pretty effective...yet there are no long term trials to determine its safety. Also, it is mandatory thanks in large part to lobbying by the manufacturer of the drug, Merck That right there is shady. The propoganda has an easy target and playing on sympathies. I don't think this should be required for school. Those are for airborne viruses.

Not to mention, Rick Perry has ties to Merck...
I say make the vaccine available, but don't make it mandatory. -------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

recommended but not mandatory.
that way when a parent is teaching solely abstinence and their daughter gets an STD, it's one less lawsuit and one more guilt stricken parent -------------------- |

maybe I'm missing something, but how the hell does the bill "contradict Texas' abstinence-only sexual education policies and intrudes into family lives"?
I agree though the bill is stupid. which is probably why it was defeated in a landslide. |

I agree though the bill is stupid. which is probably why it was defeated in a landslide. The strains of human papillomavirus that the vaccine protects against are sexually-transmitted strains. So basically Texas would be saying "hey don't have sex, but we know you're little horny fuckers anyway, so take this shot". -------------------- |

Yep. Many strains of HPV (the ones that cause common warts) are transmitted by simple contact, but these are primarily (or exclusively, I'm not entirely sure) sexually-transmitted.
