I liked this movie as well. I thought the monsters, inbreds and amount of make-up were a bit unnecessary, but the sheer tenacity of the fight sequences redeems them.

Ay.

Aren't the lines about finding soil and water in a well, if you want our weapons come get them, we'll fight in the shade etc all from written accounts of the events ?

They were raised to talk directly and to the point, with more focus on battle and war etc than art and literature. Or so they say !!@!!

I like it. It's an adaptation of Frank Miller's novel and it wouldn't be right without them.

COMIC BOOKS PEOPLE....COMIC BOOKS

You wouldn't say Spiderman is ridiculous by shooting webs from his wrists.

I don't think anybody ever meant it to be a historical representation, as much as a story of how Frank Miller wanted to represent the battle of thermopylae.

I mean hell, you think they really fuckin fought in cod pieces !?!?!?!

no, but that's not really as much of a derailment from the real story as the jabba the hut dude with blade arms.

I realize it was artistic embellishment by Frank Miller, which is why i am still considering it a good film.

I think there were alot of derailments that was the point of my post, Jim. Yes the Satyr is a derailment. I was defending the theory that there were perhaps a few too many artistic additions to a historical tale.

satyrs aren't necessarily a derailment. i haven't seen the film, but "historical" and "mythological" are pretty interchangeable when it comes to history of this nature. greek and roman history are based on myth.

This is what I was trying to get at... The story itself is steeped in mythology. People don't know how many each side had. People don't know much about the battle other than hearsay, really. The story itself was exaggerated without Miller's touch. He just made it more so.

That creature you mention is one of the common representations of gluttony.

I'm actually very much surprised at the opposing reactiong to this film. A lot of people love it. A lot of people hate it.

Some say it has political implications when Frank Miller and Snyder claim that was not the intention. People have to realize this is Frank Miller's ARTISTIC representation of the legend of the 300. This is by no means supposed to be a historic retelling of the event nor an accurate portrayal of Spartans and Persians. You were supposed to hate the Persians in the story and so they were created as a demonic horde.

It's the fact that people take things way too seriously and can't differentiate between a piece of artwork and reality.

i agree with you, but people take what they read and see and put in into context of what is going on in their lives. i admit, while watching the film i felt like it had a bit of political propaganda concerning america and freedom. was it intentional? no. america makes such a big deal about freedom, it is so ingrained in us, that any heroic story involving sacrifice for the greater good makes us arrogantly think of ourselves. (i'm refering to the part where they talked about freedom not being free, that it had to be paid for with blood, and how america is bitching because we've lost a mere few thousand troops across seas and are bitching like we never should have lost one)

I think the over-exaggeration really added to the novel feel of the movie

I was slightly disappointed that the queen was such a slut
