so, raise your hand if you're really offended if you overhear someone saying "man that's so gay".

in this context:

person 1: dude did you hear, they raised tuition on us!
person 2: man that's so gay

thats exactly the context that I hear it in all the time, and even if I were gay that wouldnt offend me. To go off what Spivey said: Yes, language is fluid. The word "gay" can now be used to describe undesirable occurrances.

I think, for now on, everytime I would have said 'gay', like "that's so gay", instead I'm going to say christian.

"Oh my god, that's so christian."

you know, all growing up people called me "weda" (the real spelling im unsure of) which means Whitey.

Wow. I had no idea. I mean, the plight of the white straight person is so often underestimated. No one can ever know the kinds of horrible things your kind must have gone through. On behalf of all gay men, please accept my sincerest apology for all that you've been through.

If you think about it, thats offensive, but if we all get soooo hurt by what people say then we are losing our backbones. There are things that should not be said.... racial slurs meant demeaningly, but in this context she was not demeaning gay people. If she walked up to a queer and straight up called him a faggot, then yes. People need to change their diapers and grow a backbone. She wasnt ridiculing anyone; in fact, quite the opposite...she was being ridiculed. Kids have no shame. I will not ever send my child to a public school. The school system in America continues to decline. We wonder why kids commit suicide? SHUT UP PEBKAC! Its not because children fear expressing their sexuality. Its rather because children are ridiculed for their looks and their personality. Most kids dont come out until after high school anyways which is a good thing. Thats a grown up decision in my opinion...because yes, it is becoming more and more of a fad

Spoken just like someone who's never had to come out of the closet before. The biggest problem with coming out of the closet isn't so much other people as it is overcoming your own internal homophobia. Using gay as a synonym for bad reinforces that homophobia, thus making coming out of the closet more difficult, thus upping depression and suicide rates.

Secondly, I don't think I've ever met a single homo who wished that they'd come out of the closet later. Being in the closet isn't fun. That's why we try to come out as soon as we can.

And lastly, no, being gay isn't a fad. If someone were to decide that they were gay because it's fashionable, they should be shot. But that's kind of a moot point because no one really decides to become gay. It's a lifestyle we're forced to live with.

Not offended, but yes extremely annoyed.

Oh, I grew up in a border town that was 90% hispanic. Yes, I've been the target of racism against whites myself.

My point is that there's no over-arching movement against white, straight people at a societal level.

This comment I have to slightly disagree with. Gay teens are shown by studies to have higher rates in suicide than heterosexual teens. It is a VERY difficult thing to grow up hearing how wrong, and dirty and foul you are. I have a friend who was exorcised....yes, i said exorcised as in what the Catholic Church does to get Satan out of your ass...and it fucked him up majorly. I don't know too many straight teenagers who are told they need to be sent to a counselor because they like the opposite sex.

As for the gay for fad thing.....that's just laughable. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and all those shows are BAD BAD BAD examples, because they show gay men as asexual fashionistas. Guess what...fags like sex just as much as heteros, and there are PLENTY of gays who don't know shit about what shoes look good with your purse and what paint will accentuate your furniture. Hell...my ex decorated his loft with airplanes and sports memorabilia...and he sucked cock. So, while there may be A FEW who choose to act gay for the attention and to be fashionable, the majority of gays are that way because they just are...

yes there is....I dont know what border town you grew up in, but most Mexicans in El Paso wont even speak to a white person, much less associate with one. I worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross in El Paso at an army hospital. I was one of the few that were VOLUNTEERING. Several low-income hispanic kids were hired for pay because of their income level. I did my duties and they did theirs. One day, I was pulled into my boss's office where she told me that I needed to leave for the day. Apparently (found this out later in the day), the fact that I was white (and yes, that is exactly what the hispanic department head said) was making the hispanic kids uncomfortable. I left and they asked me not to come back. My dad filed a complaint with the general stationed at Ft Bliss and it became a pretty big deal. I received a letter of apology from William Beaumont Army Medical Center and a certificate of completion of volunteer work from the Red Cross.

Thats what I fucking hate. Gay people, black people, mexican people who think that they have some huge struggle in society these days which is exactly why it sucks to be a white male or female with qualifications these day. Less qualified people earn positions based on their gender/race/etc. Its ridiculous.

The way I see it is, black people had more than enough amo for complaining up until the 80's. Nowdays, however, some African American kids imagine in their heads that they are victims of societal discrimination when in MOST cases that is not true (of course there are still areas of the country that are rampant with racism to which I am not addressing) and they are racist towards white people who have had nothing to do with the struggle of their ancestors. Mexicans (speaking of the ones who come here illegally or the women that cross the border to pop out a baby who is them termed legal citizen...not the ones here legitimately) cross our borders, take advantage of our healthcare and education systems, and flood the job market... oh then they cry RACISM RACISM RACISM...MEXICAN STRUGGLE WAH WAH WAH... shut the fuck up.

Honestly, a lot of that has very little to do with gay people, but you brought up societal movements. I can see where coming out would be a huge struggle because many are still discriminatory towards gays, but that is becoming less and less with each passing day. How about the term "bitching" when used in reference to someone complaining? Thats not very offensive...just slang; however, use the word "bitch" and it then becomes offensive. In my opinion the same can be said of the word "gay". Call someone gay: offensive.... "thats so gay" slang but not offensive.

Dictionary.com definition of bitch
  1. A female canine animal, especially a dog.
  2. Offensive
    1. A woman considered to be spiteful or overbearing.
    2. A lewd woman.
    3. A man considered to be weak or contemptible.
  3. Slang A complaint.
  4. Slang Something very unpleasant or difficult.
This is where the gay thing ties into the Mexican and black thing.... There is a point when you need to seperate offensiveness and normal everyday life. Just as black kids have for the most part not been subjected to racism like they think they have... so goes the whole "thats so gay" comment that is not used that way. Quit making yourself the victim when you arent is my point.

*disclaimer: I dont know what the PC terms are these days for Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, and homosexuals. Please take no offense to any terms used in the above statement. None of it is meant to be discriminatory, and most comments are based on generarlizations and do not reflect the attitude of the entire population of a community.*

I have to add that in there so that I dont get bombarded by people saying OMG SO RACIST. Im not. Im making simple generalizations.

this may or may not apply to you or pebkac... that is not part of my point so please dont take offense to what Im about to say:

Suicidal rates among homosexual males and lesbian girls might have little to do with their sexuality and more to do with their upbringing. Many openly gay people will admit to sexual abuse when they were younger. Maybe thats what causes a rise in suicide rates? You see what Im saying?

You cannot make a correlation like: Being a gay teenager means you are more at risk for committing suicide... unless you take into account the upbrining of said gay teenager. Im sure studies have been done regarding this, but I havent read up on them. Maybe there is a solid correlation between the two, but I havent heard that.

In the example you gave, yes, it was the ridicule associated with being gay that caused higher stress, but like I said many out of the closet gays have admitted to being sexually molested as children. *please note that I said "many" not "most" or "all"*

The problem is that I don't think female dogs are a portion of the population that has been struggling for equality. If that were the case, I would oppose the use of the word bitch as well.

I'm not really sure I understand what you're getting at and I honestly don't think you do either. For what you say to be true, there would have to be a correlation between sexual abuse and sexuality, which there isn't.

I mean sure, upbringing does have a huge effect, but it has a huge effect on everything psychologically. It's like saying that schizophrenia isn't as big a problem because some people can deal with it better due to their upbringing.
