What, that it means "lively" or "cheerful"? That's the word's original damn meaning.

Spec, the word "lively" and "cheerful" no longer apply to the word gay. The meanings of words change over time. The original meaning of the word is irrelevant.

While I don't agree with using the word "gay" as an insult, I don't think that speech control should be enforced. That is why we have the first amendment.

I think she was trying to point out the principal's blunder in alluding that homosexual was the original meaning.

Of course they still apply. that is still the #1 meaning of the word. just look it up on websters, oxford, or any dictionary online. the first meaning is always the "happy" one.

just because it's "slang" for homosexual now doesn't mean the word has changed. it's only been that way for 20-30 years, when previously it was probably there for hundreds. plus, it's still used in literature.

and think about this... why did the word "gay" end up meaning "homsexual?" it's because of the true definition, "cheerful, happy," etc.

Are you telling me that things like the fab five aren't contributing to a fad?

Haven't you heard phrases like it's fashionable to be gay?
I'm seeing it become more of a hip thing to do than a real part of someone's lifestyle....like being "metrosexual".

There's nothing fashionable about being gay. It's a part of society that's always been there and will always be there. The only thing that's changed is society's perception of homosexuality. The fab five are nothing but a commercial pandering to fag hags who want their men to act more comfortable in their sexuality. Nothing more.

QUOTE (griseyeux @ Mar 3 2007, 12:48 AM) *
I think what alex meant was not that homosexuality is becoming a trend, but that their is a rising stereotypically gay behavior pattern that is becoming more prevalent. And I have to say that I agree. The more that gay icons such as the fab five, bobby trendy and steven kojocaru having gained press, the more I have seen young gay men feel the need to don lip gloss and speak with a lisp. not all, obviously, but more than I had seen before being "gay" gained so much press attention.

I would disagree. That is a result of society becoming more accepting of homosexuality. Thus, young people feel more able to express their sexuality.

QUOTE
this may sound retarded but I think there is a difference between the words gay and homosexual just like there is a difference between the words black and african american.

I find the word gay offensive in and of itself, but I know homosexual people who do not mind defining themselves as gay.

I don't think I've ever met a single gay person who would prefer to be called a "homosexual" to being called "gay." Homosexual is such a clinical word. The average gay person's reaction to being called homosexual would range from being annoyed to sometimes downright offended.

Language is fluid and changing over time. How many people do you know that use the word gay to mean happy, lively, or cheerful? I don't care what Websters, oxford, or any online dictionary says. The true meaning of a word lies in its usage. And I know why the word gay was taken on by homosexuals. Thanks for making assumptions.

Yeah, I realized that later when I read that section of the article again. You could interpret what he said differently though...

QUOTE
In addition to its original and continuing senses of “merry, lively” and “bright or showy,” gay has had various senses dealing with sexual conduct since the 17th century. A gay woman was a prostitute, a gay man a womanizer, a gay house a brothel. This sexual world included homosexuals too, and gay as an adjective meaning “homosexual” goes back at least to the early 1900s. After World War II, as social attitudes toward sexuality began to change, gay was applied openly by homosexuals to themselves, first as an adjective and later as a noun. Today, the noun often designates only a male homosexual: gays and lesbians. The word has ceased to be slang and is not used disparagingly. Homosexual as a noun is sometimes used only in reference to a male.

you know, all growing up people called me "weda" (the real spelling im unsure of) which means Whitey. If you think about it, thats offensive, but if we all get soooo hurt by what people say then we are losing our backbones. There are things that should not be said.... racial slurs meant demeaningly, but in this context she was not demeaning gay people. If she walked up to a queer and straight up called him a faggot, then yes. People need to change their diapers and grow a backbone. She wasnt ridiculing anyone; in fact, quite the opposite...she was being ridiculed. Kids have no shame. I will not ever send my child to a public school. The school system in America continues to decline. We wonder why kids commit suicide? SHUT UP PEBKAC! Its not because children fear expressing their sexuality. Its rather because children are ridiculed for their looks and their personality. Most kids dont come out until after high school anyways which is a good thing. Thats a grown up decision in my opinion...because yes, it is becoming more and more of a fad
