Moot point, this is not a democracy.

Thank you Dr. Mayer... rolleyes.gif

Comparing me to a Ph.D in political science? Ok, works for me. wink.gif

We are a democracy, in its modern definition (which incorporates points from both a republic and a democracy, as I stated before). The definition that I go by is that of Robert Dahl's "On Democracy." Read it sometime, might open your eyes a bit.

Being the most powerful does not always equate to being the best.
Don't get me wrong, I like living in America, but some things about this nation piss me off.

World Imperialism is fun...
Btw, the GDP of the European Union is about the same as the United States...

The GDP, in comparison of a union of sovereign nations versus a union of states, is indeed very close (around $13 trillion each).
The REAL difference is the GDP per capita: EU = $29,300 // U.S. = $43,500

right, but would things be better in another nation? if our system isn't the best (while obviously not perfect) then what system is?

and how the hell can anyone compare the european union to the united states straight up? one is a collection of countries, the other is one country...

I'd argue that in the EU, there's a more equitable distribution of that money though.

Technically speaking the United States is a collection of States but today they are more like territories

EDIT: I don't think the United States is a bad place to live, I just think it could be better with things like medical insurance for all citizens, an end to tax cuts for the rich, etc.

meh, i still don't see how tax cuts to the rich is a bad thing. there are a lot of wealthy people who pay more to the government in taxes than the average american even makes every year, yet aren't able to receive many of the same benefits. upon death, their heirs are also taxed out the ass.

35% of $350k is a hell of a lot more money than 25% of $35k (and yes, i'm fully aware that this isn't how it's calculated, but it's damn near close), and the latter is eligible for more government benefits.

so if anything, middle- and lower-class taxpayers should pay more taxes. just my two cents. i'll never support a social welfare system, especially after living in texas.

Coming from the lower class, I hate the rich. Just my two cents. I can not and will not ever relate to them, unless of course I become rich.

Comparing them is not pointless per se. While the European Union is a weak union it is still a union...

When you only make 25k a year, taxes hurt a lot more.
