or on the other hand, as chris rock once said, you'll never have a black vice president while there's a white president.

One, we are not a true democracy
Two, I know that capitalism is an economic system (seriously zach, come on)
Three, when did I mention socialism
ASSUMPTIONS
My problem does not lie with democracy per se. The real problem is the electoral system under which our "democracy" operates.

You've told me of your political leanings before, hence my "assumptions."

But hey, political views flow like water so I guess they've changed.

No shit we're not a pure Democracy. No country is a pure Democracy. What we are is a system that operates upon the principles of a "modern democracy," which shares many characteristics of a Democracy and a Republic.

The electoral system is what it is, given the massive population that must be represented.

The electorial system is to help keep the retards (the population of america) insulated from having power.

Thats why it was designed, and it has worked very well so far. Purely popular vote elections scare me...

Nope. Depending on if I vote Democrat, Republican, whatever, my vote still counts as either a voice for the majority or minority. It represents my sentiments towards those in power/who I want inpower, my opinion on issues, etc.

Yeah, I'll be the first to admit that many of my political views are unpopular in this region. But I'm also a firm believer in change. Gradual change as it may be, I believe many long-held views in West Texas will adapt to more modern mindsets.

Fuck our electoral system. It is the great monopoly of the two party system. What America needs is proportional representation and the end of the electoral college...

And zach, Your votes for minority parties are worthless in Texas (under the current electoral system)

No vote is worthless. Such statements show a complete lack of understanding of the democratic process.

Yes, I agree that the two-party system has monopolized American politics. I'd love to see a few more strong, viable third-parties arise in the next decade. Do not forget, Spivey, that PR systems have their fair share of problems as well. The system of 'muddling through' only works so long as there is a working, stable alliance between parties of the 'majority.' A small shift either way can lead to a complete collapse in the operation of a government, thereby leading to either the drawn out and difficult process of a whole slew of new elections or simply a government that gets absolutely nothing accomplished until the next regularly scheduled elections.

No system is perfect.

Moot point, this is not a democracy.

i don't think anyone really thinks a vote is worthless, so much as a sure loss in certain areas. which is how it should be, it's how we get proper representation.

obviously no system is perfect, but the people that do nothing but sit back and bag on our system of government aren't looking at the big picture. we are the most powerful country on the planet. we're one of the most sought after countries to live in. we have the most diverse population. our citizens arguably live better than any others. our GDP is the highest (by far). our country has risen to this status, in the blink of an eye compared to any country within a spitball shot of us. i find it pretty hard to believe that our system of government is so badly broken for us to have achieved what we have.

Being the most powerful does not always equate to being the best.

Don't get me wrong, I like living in America, but some things about this nation piss me off.

World Imperialism is fun...

Btw, the GDP of the European Union is about the same as the United States...
