Remember, this is high school, when most people start to question their sexuality. Allowing students to use gay as a synonym for "bad" isn't really the best way to create a welcoming environment for teenagers who want to come out of the closet. There's a reason why suicide rates and depression rates are so high among gay teenagers.

There's a reason why suicide rates and depression rates are so high among gay teenagers. that's because they're gay, not because someone makes an out of context reference to something else saying "man that's gay". gay people have been around forever. why is this just now coming up? phrases like "that's gay" have been in use ever since I remember. |

plus...homosexuality is becoming more of a mainstream fad than anything else couldn't agree more i know i'll get flamed for this but... it's an easy out for those who can't get a sig other perhaps a result of us not keeping score at the soccer game and not teaching kids how to handle rejection/defeat? |

Want to rephrase that? Are you telling me that things like the fab five aren't contributing to a fad? Haven't you heard phrases like it's fashionable to be gay? I'm seeing it become more of a hip thing to do than a real part of someone's lifestyle....like being "metrosexual". -------------------- "Ah, y'know it's funny, these people they go to sleep, they think everything's fine, everything's good. They wake up the next day and they're on fire."

QUOTE Rick Ayers, a retired teacher who helped compile and publish the "Berkeley High School Slang Dictionary," a compendium of trendy teen talk circa 2001, said educating students about offensive language is preferable to policing their speech. "I wouldn't be surprised if this girl didn't even know the origin of that term," he said. "The kids who get caught saying it will claim it's been decontextualized, but others will say, `No, you know what that means.' It's quite talked about." What, that it means "lively" or "cheerful"? That's the word's original damn meaning. This post has been edited by Spectatrix: Mar 2 2007, 11:57 PM -------------------- |

this may sound retarded but I think there is a difference between the words gay and homosexual just like there is a difference between the words black and african american.
I find the word gay offensive in and of itself, but I know homosexual people who do not mind defining themselves as gay. and I can remember as far back as freshman year in high school (1999) hearing people respond "that's so gay." I'm not saying that that is ok; just saying that most people aren't thinking about it's reference to homosexuals when they say it even though they should be conscious of it. FYI: One of the funniest guys I know is a homosexual who uses the phrase "that's so gay" all the time. I think what alex meant was not that homosexuality is becoming a trend, but that their is a rising stereotypically gay behavior pattern that is becoming more prevalent. And I have to say that I agree. The more that gay icons such as the fab five, bobby trendy and steven kojocaru have gained press, the more I have seen young gay men feel the need to don lip gloss and speak with a lisp. not all, obviously, but more than I had seen before being "gay" gained so much attention. -------------------- Je suis toute du merde.
