Why would people be broadcasting their phones on Bluetooth unless they had a Bluetooth device (e.g. headset) hooked up?

too lazy to turn it off... maybe they dont realize how quickly bluetooth eats batteries...

Its encrypted just like 802.11b and up. Only can see if they broadcast their device, similar how you cannot pick up wireless nodes if they don't broadcast their ssid.

yeah my phone doesn't really die much more quickly with bluetooth set to discoverable. its when you really use a bluetooth device that it starts to suck up batteries. I leave mine discoverable just to be able to recieve bluejacks, my phone isn't susceptible to bluebug or bluesnarfing, so i'm not really worried about security risks.
