btw, whats the status of torrenting though the on-campus network? I'm sure it must have changed at least a little... would I be better off leaving a server machine here on the FIOS and having it download my torrents, then upload them to me at tech? or can I get at least a theoretical 400+kbps from trackers such as prq?

Yup. Our download speeds have been sucking too. Maybe it's time to see if NTS has FTTU service yet.

I've never even been able to use bit torrent with my Suddenlink. Within a few minutes of firing up any torrent program my entire home network crashes and I can't even get an IP address until i reset the modem. The only p2p program that doesn't shut down my connection like that is Limewire, and only from my Mac. And as of about 2 weeks ago I suddently stopped getting jacksquat for most of my search results...
As for NTS, they are offering FTTU, in fact a pretty little node popped up behind my house and they sent me a flyer offering to sign me up. But considering they're laying fiber all the way up the the house, the speeds they're offering barely compare to what suddenlink has right now -------------------- |

so, my best circumnavigational successes have been with changing bittorent clients. so, i would suggest that when you download your LEGAL torrent files, you switch to a more mainstream torrent program that has encryption, such as azureus or utorrent and make sure to enable encryption.
i am guessing that this solution will be fairly temporary. |

if you want a wide open connection you have to pay for it... simple as that.

I talked to a guy thats a Tier 3 rep @ Suddenlink, he said they use Ellecoya to monitor and throttle torrents, and any sort of download activity. They also throttle X-Box live, most MMO's, and the throttling is set up on timers, basically, they catch you with a spike in bandwidth, they throttle your connection to about 10kbps for 2hrs. Apparently they are going to be doing this from now on. I asked if they are going to offer any plans for a 'wide open' connection per se, he said nothing is set in stone until they switch over everything from cox. The main reason of this is apparently they're hurting for cash because of the buyout of this region, and are 'maximizing network costs' by doing this.
Time to switch ISP's... Read up on the software here: http://www.ellacoya.com/products/ -------------------- ![]() |

What would they consider a 'spike in bandwidth'?
Because regular internet surfing then downloading a pdf for class could be considered a spike in bandwidth. And Did you really mean 10kbps? Because dropping the connection (in my case) from 3700kbps to 10kbps seem over kill. |
