Hey I just got an external USB hard drive. It's a SATA hard drive and when I plug it in windows reads it as a cdrom drive for whatever reason. So I can't format it, or access it. The only thing i can think of is that it's not formatted or doesn't have a partition table. Anyone got any suggestions?

is it one of those that you load a hdd into the casing? Try to load it empty and see if it loads<edit>as a cdrom. If it still does its the usb-cid. And software provided should deal with it.</edit>

No, it came with the hd already in the casing. An there was no software provided with it, you're supposed to plug it in and it's supposed to work.

Yea, I've googled it , all I get is fucking ads for the damn things. The website of the company is broken so you can't even do shit there either.

Take it back and get one from a company that doesn't suck.

wait for the manufacturer's website to come back up and then go on there and look for software. Even though its plug in and go, they may have released something to solve this problem.

It sounds to me like a driver issue. You might try uninstalling the driver windows assigned it by default and reinstalling it through windows update (it'll ask if you want to get the driver through windows update when you try to reinstall it).

If the manufacturer didn't provide a driver disk, I'm not sure what else you'd want to try.

Ja, sounds like a driver thing. Might not be compatible with SP2? Had that problem with a USB 2.0 card not too long ago.
