So, I've decided to work out a new backup plan and thought I would share.
1. I am using a 320GB LaCie drive to do manual backups once a week (or whenever I feel it's a necessity). 2. Amazon S3 (talked about it before) is what I am using for remote backups in conjunction with JungleDisk and rsync to make incremental backups once a month or whenever I need to. 3. A monthly DVD that is burned of all important data (e-mail, documents, etc.) I also upload my photos to flickr but only some of them, I will back all of them up in the original form to S3. I am going to be trying this setup out over the next few months and seeing how it works. The only part I cannot automate is the burning of the DVD but I am working on that. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

that's great and all, but i found a major flaw: what happens when your external drive fails, Amazon S3's server explodes, your DVDs get broken, and then your computer breaks? geez man... don't you care about your data???
and on the topic, pretty cool stuff man, that amazon service is cheap as hell... i just can't wait until we have a reasonable cost blu-ray or hd-dvd drive so we can back up tons on the cheap & easy. |

The Amazon service is pretty sweet stuff and is an actual viable backup solution. I was talking to a guy there at Amazon and he said that they actually do multiple backups of your backups across the country so that your data is replicated a lot, just in case.
I am interested in seeing which wins the large DVD format. I have a feeling that blu-ray is going to lose out even though it may be the superior format. My main problem with relying on discs as backups is that over time they degrade and eventually can't be used. Solid state memory would be ideal and at some point we'll get there. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

i've read a lot on the blu-ray vs hd-dvd and it honestly seems to me like about a 60-70% chance blu-ray will win out. all of the high end video gurus are saying that with what we have right now, hd-dvd is noticeably better quality than blu-ray as far as movies go. hd-dvd is also cheaper to produce. but then on the blu-ray side, you have way more companies invested, as well as a significant amount more space to work with.
personally i don't like the fact that blu-ray requires all systems to support JVM. this alone will drive up the cost of the players, and i don't really see the point. imho dvd movie menus are already getting out of hand, and this will make things much worse. blu-ray also seems like it's built on much smaller tolerances and could result in more fragile or bad discs. we'll see how it goes but it'd be nice for it to just hurry up and end so we can get some reasonable PC drives on the market. |

yeah, with pirated dvds and that JVM, it's only a matter of time before we start getting BVD viruses

I performed my first major backup to S3 this morning. It was about 3GB of e-mail and took approximately 38 minutes. Not the fastest upload but it works and I'm happy with it. The JungleDisk system for OS X kind of stinks, because you have to tell Finder to connect everytime instead of being able to make it a favorite.
I am going to backup my music collection some time later today and I'll post when that's done. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

You're right, it was right at 38 minutes with no other traffic on the network (don't know how I hit 18). The exact data amount was right at 2.86 GB. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

cool... how much does that cost? I'll have to check but I think we're paying $120 a month. I think we're going to switch to FIOS as soon as they have it installed around here. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

i guess that wouldn't be too bad if you're splitting bills with someone. that is pretty damn fast though. it'll be nice when we get some faster options in lubbock.
