as far as organizing... i use this neat thing called directories...

Ditto on both counts. Winamp does everything I need it to and it doesn't hog system resources. For my songs, I have directories for any artist that I have more than a couple of songs for and a "random" directory for everything else. File names are all titled like Artist - Song.mp3.

If we are talking organization, I use directories as well.

Music
-- Artist
---- Album
------ Song

I try and stay away from the random directories because after I get some more music from a specific artist I need to hunt down their music in the random folder.

But that's just personal preference.

Winamp is actually working pretty well as an alternative. Just a quick question, do you need to create the directories in explorer first, then transfer them onto the device, or is there a way to create directories right onto the device? I've been poking around and haven't found anything on that yet, but I've only just started using it. Whatyagot?

yeah I do the same thing with a genre inserted at the front, so:
Music
-- Genre
---- Artist
------ Album
-------- Song

and another little piece of software that I love and is a huge help in re-tagging/organizing music is MediaMonkey. It's extremely flexible, and works great for someone who's anal about having all the tags as accurate as possible. Once you have your tags edited, it has a "auto-organize files" function that's awesome, lets you move files & rename at the same time to match your system of organization.

edit: also looks like they added ipod support

hmm that mediamonkey sounds handy. I think im going to do that. I am anal about the tags but im also lazy.

Also, I might have to add a genre subgroup like you did. My music folder is WAY too big. Thats a good idea. Only problem is its sometimes hard to classify artists.

Do you just have basic genres like rock, rap, country or do you go all out and do like alternative, poprock, punk rock, goth rock, etc?

I struggled with this as well. The main reason I stayed away from it is that almost all of my music is rock and I really did not feel like going as deep as pop rock, etc.

yeah, that could pose a problem here too. Its just that my music folder is so big that I might want to break it down somehow.... I guess I could break it down by letters... like throw all the "A" bands in one folder, etc

yeah i'm sure a lot of the bands i labeled certain genres to are way off. here's what i've used for quite a while:

80s
Christian
Classic Rock
Classical
Club
Collections
Comedy
Country
Disco
Easy
Favorites
Holiday
Jazz
Metal
Oldies
Other
Pop
Punk
R&B
Rap & Hip Hop
Rock
Soundtrack
Unsorted

I might combine punk & rock since a lot of bands seem to be doing a kind of mixture of both now. Unsorted is where I put newly download stuff that I haven't tagged/sorted w/MediaMonkey yet.

Ok, so... I *think* by directories you mean playlists for winamp, or am I mistaken about that? Because what I think I'm needing to do is separate out all the songs into their proper categories, then create playlists for each folder, within that folder. Then when I move it onto the ipod, everything should be superkeen, yes?

USER FRIENDLY MY ACHING ASS

Edit: Hold up, think I got it figured out after crawling through PAGES of winamp documentation -,-

Redit: Meh, sorta. Still trying to figure out how to get it to display the artists as selectable, then their songs

no, by directories, they mean not throwing all your mp3s into one folder, and instead, organizing them into multiple folders in your file system. organizing them outside of the mp3 player.
