Global Warming Options

I just watched a pretty interesting special on the history channel on ways our civilization could be destroyed, and of course global warming was discussed, and of course Al Gore had to have his dumbass say.I'm curious what people on here think about this.

The main questions seem to be:
1) Do you think it's really happening (general consensus now is that it's definitely happening)
2) Is it our fault?
3) What can we do to stop it?

Anyhow I was thinking... we have what like 6 billion people all breathing 24-7 (twice as many as in 1960), that's got to be a lot of CO2... i tried for a few mins to find an exact number on how much we breathe out, couldn't find much but an interesting quote off a site:

As a committed member of the NWF I am a somewhat dismayed that there is not a more serious “conversational” discussion of the global warming issue. Global warming is occurring. While I can cite several circumstances that suggest that global warming has occurred in my lifetime (65 plus years) it is my observation that these short term events do not define a causal trend in global warming. Global warming has historically occurred periodically in 15,000 - 20,000 year cycles independent of human impact. Making global warming “links” to the phenomenal explosion of the global population’s impact on global warming is more pertinent than looking at automobile contribution. In other words, since the CO2 emitted by the typical automobile is blamed for putting the primary atmospheric pollutant (CO2) into the atmosphere the environmental community assumes that the automobile is the culprit. However when one analyzes the CO2 emissions from human metabolism, which is about 1140 pounds of CO2 per year, and compares it with the average CO2 output from a typical automobile (about 4,400 pounds per year) it can be seen that the 6 billion people on the planet exhale about four times more CO2 (3 billion tons per year) than the global auto population (about 700 million tons.) Then factor in that the human population is increasing faster (250,000 per day) than the auto population by a ratio more than of 20:1 and it can be concluded that human population growth is a bigger CO2 threat than automobile use and production. What this says is that the increase in human population increases CO2 substantially more CO2 than the increase in the automobile population. Let’s have a national/global discussion about which is more important: Human population growth versus automobile population growth based on factual information.

I have no idea how correct this is and would like to find more numbers to confirm this, but it does put an interesting spin on what dipshits like Al Gore try to tell you.

while on this subject, i remember an article where someone attacked the rainforest crunchy granola hippies on how much the rainforest actually contributes to our ozone, or something. i want to find it again, but the jist of it was that the rainforest was only a small contributor, and that the main producer of oxygen and stuff was actually moss, and stuff like that, or something. was hoping someone might be able to either remember ot, or help me find it.

It is actually algae, and its something really fucking high, like 70%. The rainforest IS however important for herbs for medicines and stuff like that, not to mention thousands of species of animals, many of which haven't even been discovered yet.

I'm going to stand by my theory that we just need another global plague to wipe out 1/3 of the world's population. It sounds sadistic but it would really solve many of our worlds problems, including pollution, starvation, and maybe even peace (Common enemies tend to solve those kinds of problems.)

slightly off the topic, that special is going to be on again on history channel several times looks like, one at 5pm tonight. it was really interesting (cept seeing Al Gore).

While I do agree that global warming is occurring I do not think it is happening for the reasons that are on the news nor do I think it is happening on the scale that is being presented.

In the last two hundred years there have been major volcano eruptions and we're still here. Considering that Krakatoa put three years worth of CO2 and NO into the atmosphere in an instant, I'm not too worried.

I think that the Earth can handle these massive changes and correct itself. I do think that we can help the situation but the main reason I want public transportation is for the energy problems themselves. China and India are complete messes and China is not getting any better... What's the statistic about their power plants, a new one is started every five months or something? That's insane. (this is where a massive plague might be a good thing)

A lot of what I have read agrees that we are going through global warming but that it is a cyclic thing and that things will settle down, just like they have in the past.
