So, apparently we got us a set of ipod nanos for christmas. Can't say I particularly wanted mine, but since I have it, I've got a few questions about using it.
First of all, apparently you have to install itunes to even move music onto the damn device in the first place. It really isn't that big of a deal, but every mp3 player I've had previously has just allowed dragging and dropping, no questions asked. It's not that it's a big convenience, but I've heard that iTunes sucks systems resources like a 2-dollar whore sucks dicks, not to mention that it wraps all the tunes you put into it with its own DRM, which just ain't cool. There's also a few other reasons, but I can't remember what they are, currently. At any rate, which of this stuff is true and are there apps/progs/utlis/hacks that can be used to get around all this? Whatcha got? -------------------- ![]() |

Whatcha got? Rockbox is good stuff. But, if you want to keep the Apple firmware you can just set the iPod to be used as a harddrive and just do exactly what you want (drag and drop). iTunes does not wrap your music into any DRM, it simply enforces the DRM that comes with songs downloaded from the iTunes music store. Me personally, I rip my music using CDex and just throw it on the iPod. iTunes is a resource hog but is the main tool for configuring your iPod the way you want. You can set up the iPod not to even look at iTunes when you connect it and just drop your music onto it like you would another drive on your machine. You just need to configure iTunes not to organize your music and take some time to play with it till you have what you want. If you are fairly good at keeping your music organized you shouldn't have a problem. -------------------- "There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: that of the fashionable non-conformist." |

my friend was asking this because he got one (i don't know anything about itunes/ipod/etc), if you rip your own CDs with itunes, does it put DRM in the music? no, however by default it encodes in .AAC format, you can easily change this in the options (under advanced>importing, i think) -------------------- WAIT. I'm not finished.

http://www.rockbox.org/ enjoy. Nice, looks like a nice piece of equipment. S'pose I'll just have to wait til they figure out a hack for the second generation nanos, which are apparently the ones we've got. Til then I s'pose I'll have to use iTunes -------------------- ![]() |
