pretty crazy
not to play devil's advocate (ok well maybe i am), but I'd be interested what his dad does for a living since they were compelled to say "with a little help from his dad". and while very impressive, it must not have been as ground breaking as it sounds when the guy is only semi-finalist at some research competition and "hopes to qualify" at some Intel science & engineering fair. another article mentions "The design of the model came from his own ideas and some suggestions from other science-lovers he met online." |

I don't think there is any problem getting advice from other "science lovers". He is the one who actually put it together, did the research, bought the parts, and imagined it.

ok... what "research" do you think he did? the kid found some plans, got some help, and zapped electricity through a tube. i'm not saying the kid aint a genius, i'm just saying the headline "TEEN CREATES FUSION in his home" is a little misleading.
i would seriously doubt the kid just woke up one day and thought.. gee if i take a steel chamber, make a vacuum, fill it with deuterium gas, then grab some parts of an old mammogram machine and switch it on with 40,000 volts i'll create fusion!! what it sounds like to me is the kid is extremely smart and interested in science, heard of people doing this, and wanted to do it himself. since it says his dad provided "a little help" i'm guessing his dad played some part in getting the parts necessary. now don't get me wrong i think it's great to see stuff like this, but the kid no more "created" fusion than i just "created" fertilizer when i took a dump earlier. here's the site's forum http://www.fusor.net/board/index.php?site=fusor |

The headline is not wrong, he did create fusion in his home. Yeah, he may have gotten some help but it is still remarkable for his age. I would not have been able to do anything like that at 17, and I doubt I still could.

You'll fund my orbital death laser, power armor, and battle mech projects? Sweet!

I have to wait for an influx of money before I can progress *too* far. Anyone have a nice big inheritance they'd like to throw my way?
