so, i was offered a job and get to choose whether i go to san antonio or phoenix. any thoughts?
keep in mind that i hate texas, but i guess san antonio isn't that bad. the cost of living in phoenix is much higher, but the same job in that city pays $3k more.

SA is not bad. I would live there over dallas. and it's a better geographic location if you're inclined to surf.

Phoenix is hot as fuck... you probably don't want to live there. Hot as in 104 degrees at 3 o'clock in the morning in July/August hot.

true but you're also just 2 hrs away from flagstaff, which is one rad little town. skiing, college, cool weather. I've spent the night there many a times driving from amarillo to SD during the summer and had to break out beanie and hoodie.

I have a tentative offer for 30 doing something that I really enjoy, but I also have a offer for around 40ish doing something nowhere near as fun.

Oh, and I love Phoenix. SA is alright, but the glow of the riverwalk wears off after a few weeks, just like the glow of 6th street does (not dissing Austin here).

10 grand is a lot of money. that's like $625/month take home. just be sure that the job you love also leaves you some room for more money later. also keep in mind that a lot of times a job will sound like it might be a lot of fun and then turn out to be entirely different once you get there and/or the novelty of it wears off and you begin to hate what you once liked.

i wouldnt live in dallas or houston if my life depended on it. really the only place in texas that i like so far is Austin. El Paso wouldnt be so bad if there was more to do and there werent so many damn border jumpers. I have never been to Corpus though... so maybe I would like it there. Honestly, I would like to live in Florida... so awesome there.

I keep flip flopping on whether or not I want to look for a new job now or in a few months. I don't know what kind of work I'd like to look into. I love problem solving, making things "work," and getting to the bottom of problems. I'm starting to think that security would be real fun to get into.

It's a small company here in the Dallas area that makes a corporate vulnerability scanner and remediation software... similar to Nessus, eEye Retina, and Saint except the software will fix the holes it finds.

They have a pretty sweet setup in the office with a room that looks sorta like a NOC but it streams security vulnerabilities straight from CERT, SecurityFocus, etc. as they're found. As soon as they're found they incorporate it into their Hercules scanning software.

McAfee was tired of having them compete with their Foundstone software so they just purchased the company for 58 million a few weeks ago. So if I take this job with Citadel I'll end up working for McAfee in 3 months when Citadel moves into the McAfee office.

I think these virus scanning companies are getting into the hardcore security business because they know Microsoft is going to lock them out of the kernel in Vista etc. so they need to find new ways to make money or they'll die. Symantec is purchasing security companies also, they bought a company called WholeSecurity last year in Austin. You might want to see if you can still jump on board with them. They make some kind of anti-spam and anti-fishing software.

I'm leary of this kinda shit, because I haven't found any true explanation of its usefulness. We have implemented some products from Critical Watch these last few weeks, their FusionVM shit.

It's kool and the gang that these appliances are supposed to do "vulnerability assessments" and the sort, but they never get into details on HOW they work. Port scanning ? Packet monitoring ? I just hate that I can read pages and pages of documentation and all I see is IT fluff with no grits and gravy.


What kind of role would you play ? Investigating new vulnerabilities or the integration ?
