I just wish Dallas would get rid of the toll roads, toll roads are un-American. We only have one free major north/south highway and that's 75. They need to open up the Dallas North Tollway to the public.

You can't tell me 10-15 years of tolls hasn't paid for the construction yet.

Houston has had a tollroad (the Beltway) for almost 20 years. The money they make is used to make improvements, upkeep, etc. Not to just pay for the construction.

There is also 35 North and South, 360, 161 (also a tollroad), and Beltline (if you don't mind lights). That is one of my pet peeves though, not enough north and south roads and fact that there isn't a true loop. 635 sucks and people on 75 have no idea what they're doing.

There are good things about Dallas but for me they don't outweigh the things I dislike. It's a fun city with a lot of life but it just isn't for me. Ft. Worth is a little better but they still believe in the true turnpike system with 20, 30, and 121/183, it's annoying.

From Austin to the north side? What 290 to 45/59 via the Beltway?

I like the Beltway. I can go 80 and the cops don't care and people don't drive 50 in the left lane like here. And if they do drive 50 they get shot and you hear about it on the 10pm news.

yeah thats the route. i NEVER drive the beltway i avoid it out of fear. that and i never have change for tolls. so i end up takign the 1960 exit and drive through streetlights every 100m for an hour. which isnt any better

They are still expanding it to the North. I think eventually it is supposed to serve as an alternate route to Oklahoma.

I dont think Dallas is as bad as ya'll describe. The people do drive crazy but you can easily live/work in one part of town and use very little highway. I guess this would be easier in the suburbs. Also the rail system is pretty good for getting downtown if you don't want to fight the traffic.

See that doesn't work for me. I have to travel to and from clients which means I must use the freeway system here. It is a poorly planned metroplex. It expanded way too quickly for them to do anything about it so now they're just trying to get by. The problem with living in one area and working there is that for some it isn't economically feasible, aka, downtown, uptown, and highland park, they're close to work for some but almost impossible to afford. Then you have the idiots who live in Ft. Worth but drive to Dallas for work everyday. Doesn't make any sense. They could at least ride the TRE from downtown to downtown, but nope, they've gotta drive.

It's a suburban area that doesn't want freeways but doesn't want to wait in traffic to get to work. Hell, just tonight on the news they announced one community's disgust that a public transportation train would be using the tracks near their community. In my opinion, cities that closely border Dallas proper (Irving, Richardson, Oak Cliff, etc.) should be annexed by the city of Dallas so that some kind of organization can be brought upon the confusion.

What they do not realize (or maybe they do) is that they are creating more chaos by moving the Cowboys to Arlington. It's already a day trip just to get down there during a normal work day, let alone during a baseball game or during the summer. 161 will open up in a couple of years but that will barely help. 360 is a poor excuse for a highway, especially since you can't actually exit directly onto 30. It's just a mess and they aren't doing anything to fix it.

Oh, and has anyone noticed that you can only go west on 183 from 121 (they merge but there is no way to go eastbound on 183 from it).

By the way, I-30 used to be a tollroad. I was talking to an older man that lived in Ft. Worth most of his life and he was telling me how they decided to open it up to regular traffic after congestion got so bad on I-20. I don't know how true that is but if anyone knows anything about it I'd love to read it.

I guess I am really inspired by Europe and how they deal with transportation and growing cities. People barely drive in most major cities, they take trains, buses, and walk. It's a great way to live.

well if you look at europe it operates almost exactly like our new england area does. it wouldn't be economically feasible in a place like dallas or houston to do subways & trains. dallas & houston are way too spread out for these types of transportation.

And therein lies the problem. We love our space, even in New England, suburbanization is going to kill this country. Hell, I'd love to take a 30 minute train to work, I could get a ton of crap done.
