I received a job offer for a lot more than I am making now (programming is extremely hot right now) last week and turned it down for multiple reasons, the main two being that I couldn't be without healthcare for 3 months and the fact that I do not want to stay in Dallas (or Texas).

Because the job that I would have taken has a three month probation/tryout period before you get healthcare, something that is becoming more and more standard so that companies don't have to commit money and resources to a person who in the end will not work out.

Yes, you did make an advance in your career, because quite obviously your manager or boss or whoever is going to reward the person who puts the time and effort in completing more work and learning more about the business. I'm sorry, but what you're proposing is incredibly naive and improbable for the most part. The probability of someone who does not put any extra time and effort in doing as good of job as somone who IS putting that time and effort in going farther in the company is MUCH smaller that for someone who's busting their ass.

And I can already see where you're going with this, "blah blah blah blah, well, what if I do a better job in half the time, blah blah blah" and my answer is read what I just wrote: That doesn't happen very bloody often. You can rationalize it all you want, and you're still gonna be stuck...

Labor Union work ethic is essentially what you're describing, and if you work for a progressive company, that shit just isn't gonna cut it .... Wait until you've been passed up for promotions by people who are willing to bust their asses at work then come talk to me about how great you are in respect to them and how you should have been the one promoted and blah blah blah.

I've seen this and heard this so many times from people it's staggering, and yet somehow magically the people who complain about having to put extra time in at work are more often than not the ones who never go all that far in their careers.....which is fine if you're happy with that I guess *shrug*

so basically what you're saying is you feel that if your body is in the chair at work more than someone else, you're more valuable. in this case, it's just like Lance said, enjoy the rest of your life working 60 hr work weeks. maybe the company i work for is different somehow, i dunno, but if i had a little extra work today and decided to stay until 5:30 or 6:00pm (which i do on occasion), i'd be the last person leaving. my bosses don't give a shit if i'm up here until midnight. sure a boss will give you a little extra verbal "great job" or "thanks", but all they really care about is if you got done what you were supposed to. you can keep jabbing at me with your stupid shit like "i guess if you're happy not going anywhere blah blah" all you want. the simple fact is i've gotten an enormous amount of raises since i've started. all due to the fact that i'm gaining more knowledge, getting more done in less time, and proving my worth and reliability to the company. i honestly could give two shits if i'm working from a plastic desk on a 486 or sittin on a solid gold office chair with a 15 foot monitor. all i care about is watching that paycheck rise, and gaining experience.

Different strokes for different folks. I personally could care very little about the money as long as I am able to pay rent, car payment, and food. That's all I want. What I do want from my job is to be happy, have decent benefits (healthcare), and be able to innovate/make decisions. My end goal is to own my own business, meet new clients, and love what I do.

Money is a detail. I save a good amount and max out my Roth and other mutual funds.

It wasn't contract to hire... You are hired, they just don't give you benefits, 401k, etc. until 90 days is up. I wouldn't do contract-to-hire anyway, it's too risky for the exact reasons that you listed.

It's not just the traffic, it's the city in general. I now know why they call Dallas residents $50,000 millionaires. They all live like they make a ton of money when in reality they don't make crap.
