Apples and oranges.
Blogger is a type of blog hosted by google while wordpress is something that you would host on your own website. If you have your own webspace that can run PHP, go with wordpress as it's a lot more flexible. He may have been referring to http://www.wordpress.com, a hosted service from Automattic and the Wordpress folks. It has only been down once and is pretty fast.
Robert Scoble and many others host their blogs there. wordpress, textpattern.

I've seen better results with wordpress, but i've heard there can be a lot of configuration issues and that when something goes wrong, everything goes wrong. That being said, i've never actually used it myself, however. Just saying what i've been told, as I haven't "blogged" in a few years. (when i did, though, I used blogger, but they were pretty much the only choice at the time, and it was well before the google aquisition. I wasn't all that fond of them either.)
