I think I might have posted this topic three or four times in the past, messed with it, gave up, tried again, searched, gave up, etc. This time we have victory (mostly).
For those who have Cox Cable (suddenlink, blah, whatever), have the Motorola DCT6412 PIII box (HD-DVR), and want to stream video directly from the box, I found this great link here: http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/ This guy developed firewire drivers for the box, so you can basically just plug it into your computer via a firewire cable, and your comp will see it as a TV-Tuner. He also did a small app that decodes the "transport stream" from the box and converts it to mpg. I have a windows MCE 2005 box right by the TV and I'm going to see if I can actually use it this way to simply record straight to the comp as well (as soon as i find the damn firewire port that came w/my motherboard). only downside is that some channels are copy protected and provide no output at all. the link has instructions on how to check which channels are, but so far the ones i've found with the protection enabled are: ESPNHD HBO (all of them) DISCHD HDNET HDNET Movies Discovery channels 100-105 or whatever in general your more "premium" channels will be protected. regular every day stuff seems to be ok (ESPN, FSN, discovery, foodtv, etc). i imagine some uber-nerd will come up with a decoder for the 5c encryption some day and we'll be able to record anything. obviously you still have to sit there and let your PC record while the show runs, but this is way better than using some coax A/V output to a video capture card and losing a lot of quality. |

sweet. I have this box, (with verizon FIOS now, even though it's a comcast/time warner box) and I just bought some new harddrives...
perfect timing. edit: btw, lemme know if you can get MCE2005 to actually use it as a tuner through the media center program. Every tuner i've tried isn't MCE compatible. (With the program, they still work in Windows with external apps, but just not with the Media Center program) This post has been edited by zetec: Sep 6 2006, 11:34 AM -------------------- WAIT. yeah it's a great box, that pioneer echo software is really intuitive. i can't seem to find the damn firewire port that came w/my motherboard so i can't try the mce thing until i get a card or something, but i'll keep messin with it w/my roommate's laptop.

worked like a charm using my roommate's laptop to record 480i. tried recording HD but it was choppy... prob due to the laptop though. i got a firewire card on the way from newegg to put in the MCE box so i'll get to test that next week. hopefully a 2.8GHz P4 w/1 GB DDR will have enough juice to record smooth HD signals.

final update on this: does not work as an MCE tuner even though it shows up as a TV Tuner. i assume the guy probably didn't do his drivers that extensively. and the choppiness in the HD recording wasn't my roommate's laptop's fault, it was some shitty software the guy recommended to convert the stream from ts (transport stream) to ps (program stream (mpg)). i simply changed his suggestion in his how-to on using the .ts extension to using .mpg, then adobe premiere 2.0 had no problem importing those files to do whatever i wanted with.
oh and one last thing, video capture programs... like windows movie maker, seem to want to use the device, but always say it's in use. someone else might be able to find some way around that i dunno. the app the guy who did the drivers works fine though so i guess it's no big deal. |

i havent seen a SINGLE device tuner work with MCE ever, with the only exceptions being PC's with the tuner and MCE installed as OEM.

I know for a fact the Hauppage ones work fine because I watched my buddy install and configure his. And here's eleven different models from four different brands that they sell from their "windows marketplace" crap under the category "Media Center: TV Tuner Cards". besides... when talking about hardware, it's the manufacturer of the hardware's responsibility to create drivers and make sure they work properly. |

i have 2 happauge cards, one with a BT878 chipset and one with some other BT chipset i forget. They're somewhat old, but that's no excuse for not supporting legacy hardware. I also tried a sony card with some conexant ripoff of the BT chipset, but that card was fucked up as far as support went in the first place.

I picked up a Hauppauge USB2 MCE, works pretty well, and also found this which takes advantage of the firewire/and/or/usb on your cable or satellite box

That is freakin sweet
-------------------- A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?
