Eh, much as I'd like to see Kim Jong Il taken out, we don't really have the resources to do so. Not to mention that he has lots of artillery right outside S Korea that could wipe out hundreds of thousands of people.

If we want a draft we should invade North Korea because that's exactly what will happen...

eh i don't know about that...

We have around 720,000 total army + marines (including reserves) right now. With something like 140,000 in Iraq. If this NK nuke stuff starts getting bad enough, I could see other countries pitching in a lot more troops than they are to the Iraq war (we'll see if the UN holds up their own sanctions this time). North Korea is also nearly 1/4 the size of Iraq, so I wouldn't see any kind of troop shortage to invade NK. I'd bet our troop contribution wouldn't be more than like 50-75,000.

That 720,000 does not take into account that a good number of those are not combat ready troops (desk sitters if you will). Also, if a war was to start I can say almost without a doubt that China would be drawn in somehow. North Korea would be much more willing to fight than Iraq, turning the very mountainous terrain into a modern day Iwo Jima. That region has not forgotten Vietnam and how a seemingly renegade, guerilla army and militia defeated a super power simply by going underground.

The training of our troops has changed as well. We've been training for an urban combat scenario, that training would need to again be changed to accomodate the type of combat that would be seen in North Korea.

Draft would be the only neccasary means to fight the war. All I have to do i look at Vietnam for that. We all remember vietnam, thousands of US troops lost their lives and the country was bitterly divided. Invading north korea would not be a good idea at all.

Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

It depends on how China responds. In the Korean War the UN was kicking the NK's asses, then China joined.

Assume that china did not get involved (which I find highly unlikely, that would be like someone invading canada and the US not getting involved), it would still be vietnamesqe cluster fuck. Those fuckers would hide in the jungles and hills and snipe us down. Not to mention this is not iraq, these guys are a united nationality and they will not take lightly to us imperialist invasion, even if we did free them from communism which would mean that they would finally be re united with korea proper, which all koreans really want. And if these guys have one or two nukes, it only makes the situation more complicated especially if they take out some of our guys or decide to launch on at Japan...

Also, this is not the same korea of 1950 days. They have two or three nukes and the fourth largest military in the world. They also learned from Vietnam how to defeat a superpower if need be.

I'm not sure you can really compare a war today in NK with Vietnam. The technology of the day is completely different.

That's what they said then... They thought that helicopters, napalm, laser guided bombs (yeah they were perfected during Vietnam), and planes that could fly higher, faster, and shoot down the enemy from farther away without guns would win the war. They were horribly wrong. They found that napalm inflicted heavy casualties on civilians just as much as the enemy, that helicopters were susceptible to enemy fire, laser guided bombs can't win a war alone, and that planes need more than speed and good radar.

Yes, they've corrected those problems but new ones will arise, just like we are seeing in Iraq now with the body armor, the Stryker vehicle being inadequate, and urban combat.

the problems in iraq right now are suicide & car bombings. somehow i doubt that's how a war in NK would play out.

the funny thing is people say "well they learned from vietnam how to beat a superpower blah blah blah". it works both ways. there's no doubt in my mind we learned plenty from vietnam too. as far as i know (and i don't know much) of the vietnam war, there wasn't an immediate draft, there was a draft when tens of thousands of US soldiers needed to be replaced.
