QUOTE (Testm0nkey @ Oct 4 2006, 07:55 PM)
so its not worth it if there were never any lives in danger in the first place?  you know that circumstance probably happens more often than otherwise

if you do bad things because someone else did bad things the original perpretrator does worse.  kindergarten politics in the real world

theoretical:

You have a choice of torturing 5 known al-qaeda members (i'm talking real torture not the frat boy hijinks(sp?) that seem to have gone on that everyone is bitching about). There's a good chance one of these 5 men knows about a new planned attack on the United States and this is they only way you'll get information. The 5 people endure intense pain, but have no lasting physical injuries.

or

Do not torture, 5 men stay quiet. Attack happens (nuclear bomb destroys Texas Stadium (heh i hate the cowboys), and the 100,000+ people in and around the area die, with several hundred thousand more injured.

"and this is they only way you'll get information."

i can never picture a circumstance in which this would be true
torture is torture and it is wrong. this is why we have intelligence and diplomacy. to find out things like this without abusing any humans rights

diplomacy pretty much goes in one ear and out the other to those who are guilty of terrorist plots.

depends on how you look at it....

perhaps its a viscious circle we are in with muslim extremists.... like we treat them like shit because they treat us like shit and vice versa.

or

is this something that couldnt have ever been avoided? like do they envy us for who we are, how we spend our money, and what god we trust in.

if its the second, then there is no way that diplomacy will work. perhaps in the very short future....but nothing long term

A psychotic world we live in. The madmen are in power. How long have we known this? Faced this? And--how many of us do know it? Perhaps if you know you are insane then you are not insane. Or you are becoming sane, finally. Waking up. I suppose only a few are aware of all this. Isolated persons here and there. But the broad masses... what do they think? All these hundreds of thousands in this city, here. Do they imagine that they live in a sane world? Or do they guess, glimpse, the truth...?

1. jessica, that was lyrics from the band System of a Down

2. spivey, by bringing in lyrics from a band is the equivelant of someone talking about jesus, and another person busting out saying "mel gibson did an awesome job"

3. cathryn, either 100,000 people die, or 5 terrorists already deserving of getting their asses beaten get tortured
not an answer that needs much thinking, the world is not a perfect place where there is always a right answer. lesser of 2 evils.

4. that robot bitch has some crazy long legs

in my mind you cant condone torture in some circumstances and then not abide by that in others. it is either an inherently evil thing or its not. in my mind because it is going against one of the most fundamental agreements in human society. that and the hypocracy of invading a country because the leader had been known to torture his people and then go around and torture his people and others

but this threads core issue i think is how bush is trying to get around the law and taking responsibility something the adminstration in my mind has a problem doing
